With this new running buddy, you can train to the tune of 500 songs of your choice. And it stands to reason with the recent and sudden passing of music icon Prince, that I would run my heart out to some of his best tunes.
Here are a few features of this new fitness gadget:
24/7 activity tracking
GPS tracking
Multisport mode
Built-in heart rate monitor
Up to 500 songs of music storage
And I highly recommend the bluetooth headphones. It will truly change your running game.
You also have a 30-day money back guarantee, which is a huge plus anytime I order new trackers – sometimes they just don’t work for my particular activity or they aren’t comfortable. Everyone is different, so it’s great to know you can send it back if it isn’t motivating you like you need.
PS – what’s your favorite Prince song? Mine is a tie between Little Red Corvette and Party Like It’s 1999 (since that’s the year I graduated highschool and we played that song on repeat).

This Wednesday, Houston runners/athletes/social do-gooders get a chance to train with the best – Calum Neff, a local Houston based distance runner. Cal competed and won the 2014 Wings for Life World Run in California (the inaugural run), being the last man standing at all 5 North American races. He competed in the Turkey race last year extending his time 19 minutes covering 39.95 miles (I need Gatorade just reading everything he’s done!).
The training session will be at Memorial Park from 6-7:30p – you can check out the FB event here.
I will be there, who wants to join?
Here’s more info on Cal’s training session this Wednesday:
The next Wings for Life World Run takes place worldwide on May 8th, 2016 and anyone, anywhere can run in the event (be sure to join THE BLONDE SIDE’S TEAM). Even if you can’t make one of the actual race locations you can run for those who can’t and raise money to cure spinal cord injuries by using the World Run Selfie App.
We will meet near the benches in front of the Tennis Center on the Memorial Park Running Loop at 6PM before heading out on a training run where world record holder Calum Neff and his daughter in the stroller will simulate the World Run by giving you a head start and chasing you down! Don’t worry, this is all for fun and ALL paces are welcome, we will run one 3 mile loop (but feel free to do more).
*I’ll be doing an article/interview with Cal to get some expert running tips for summertime weather (especially for us Houston folks). If you have any questions you want me to ask him, leave a comment below and I’ll try to include it!

Part of my 2016 makeover is falling back in love with Houston.
Looking for the cutest and most unique date nights in the area, new brunch spots, local shops and stores to spend money I don’t have and so much more.
That’s why I love this deal from Houston Tidbits for 1/2 off Sweet Paris Crepes – I’ve already bought two. Now I just have to figure out who I want to invite along with me.
If you haven’t been to this cute spot (there are two, I’ve only been to the one in Rice Village), you will absolutely love the scene and the menu options. Calorie overload, but well worth it!
The deal is for $20 (which is normally $40) and you will receive a meal for two including any two savory crepes or waffles and any one sweet crepe or waffle to share, plus two apple ciders, or two glasses of wine.
I got this press release and so wish I was in Washington to help Muckleshoot Casino aim for this record.
Check out the release below, and if you’re in the area, go in my place! This casino was named a “local favorite” by Thrillist.

Everything you need to know about arranging the perfect Belize vacation
If there were ever a destination that was trending, especially from Houston, Belize would be that spot right now. And for good reason.
Belize is just a quick 2.5-hour flight from Houston, out of either airport. (If you’ve seen the new Southwest billboards scattered around Houston encouraging international travel out of the newly remodeled Houston Hobby Airport, you know how easy it is to get to Belize now.) Everything is fairly affordable, making it one of the hotspots for Houston travelers, especially for a quick weekend getaway.
Belize lies on the east coast of Central America in the heart of the Caribbean Basin, and is one of those destinations that requires a little extra work, but it’s worth it. There aren’t hotel chains and all-inclusive resorts to help make the booking and logistical stuff easier, but rest assured that’s a good thing. Although it’s becoming more Americanized every day, there is still much of Belize that remains authentic, giving you the best of both worlds, literally. It also happens to be the only country in Central America where English is the official language, so travelers weary of language barriers can flourish here.
As someone who has traveled to Belize quite a few times, I’ve learned several common misconceptions about Belize. And I have a few tips for the savvy traveler.
For starters, as quick, easy and cheap as the ads make it sound, getting to destinations beyond
Adventures with Belize Parasail
Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE), which is where you’ll fly directly to from Houston, will cost a little more money and time (not just the 2.5-hour flight advertised). Upon reaching BZE, most travelers venture on to various destinations such as Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) or Caye Caulker by way of a small prop plane by way of Maya Island Air or Tropic Air (which offer excellent views of the beautiful water).
Pretty much anywhere you travel in Belize, you’ll want to – no scratch that – need to, be on the water. Being on an island is great and wonderful but finding yourself in your hotel pool staring into the crystal clear water just yards away will make you wish you did more research before booking your flight on a mobile app the night before. My vote is for Ambergris Caye in San Pedro.
Many traveling to Belize assume it’s a lot like Cozumel or Punta Cana with amazing infinity pools overlooking white sandy beaches and easy access to the water, but that isn’t the case.
Take San Pedro for instance. There are some very nice hotels (nicer ones include Victoria House and The Phoenix), but they aren’t built for guests to spend their entire vacation on their small private sectioned off beaches and tiled pools. Although beautiful and relaxing (and some far from all the action, like Matachica), your pools won’t offer swim-up bars and partying guests. In fact, most of the resorts have a limited number of chairs and hammocks specifically for guests, since it’s an island meant to be seen on the water.
Keeping costs down
A blonde in Belize
As affordable as the flights may be, costs quickly add up booking a few water activities during your stay. I spoke with a few locals and business owners, and the best way to get the most affordable cost is to negotiate all your activities up front. Again, this is why just getting there and going with the flow isn’t necessarily the best option for this particular destination.
For example, I worked out a three-day deal with Belize Parasail (located on Fido’s Dock, which is a great meeting spot for friends or to grab a drink and late lunch). Booking it all together and being up for various adventures really got the price down. One day we went fishing and then took the boat to a private island where the captain cooked the fish we caught while we frolicked around in the beautiful blue ocean. Another day we went parasailing, and another day we went wakeboarding. (Belize Parasail is the only place to offer wakeboarding in the area). Booking them all with the same outlet helped keep it affordable, plus you get the luxury of getting to know the staff, which is key to spending a good week in Belize.
Pretty much all of San Pedro is walkable, so you won’t need a rental car. Taxis are very affordable (and negotiable) and will usually run about $5 – $10, and many get around San Pedro by way of water taxi.
A few tips:
· Speaking of tips, it is customary to tip your captains and guides during your adventure. Most say either $20 or 20% of the trip is sufficient, but the people are so nice, they will appreciate any monetary acknowledgement. This has become a common question for travel etiquette.
· Don’t get sticker shock. About 95% of the prices you see will be in Belize and two Belize dollars equal one U.S. dollar.
· Bring cash. Every place in Belize requires the tab be at least 25 Belize dollars to use a credit card, so for a quick drink or snack, you’ll want cash. They also take U.S. dollars so no need to convert, but make sure to convert or use your Belize money before getting to the airport. I’ve yet to find a place that will change Belize money back to the dollar.
· Go during lobster season, which typically runs February through July. I haven’t been yet, but that’s all I hear anyone talk about is how amazing lobster season in Belize is.
· Keep it casual. Belize is a super casual and comfortable spot. You’ll rarely see girls in heels and guys in anything other than a T-shirt or polo and shorts.
· Like all island destinations, be prepared. Temperatures can drop, rain can fall and wind can pick up – for days at a time.
My preferred itinerary in a nutshell:
Fly Southwest from Houston Hobby Airport to BZE.
Take Maya Island Air to San Pedro/Ambergris Caye.
Stay at The Phoenix Hotel (ranges $325 – $525).
Massage on the beach (in a little hut, with certified therapists) and forego the typical spa scene.
Book an all day private trip (ask for the “everything package”) with Belize Parasail, on Fido’s Dock.
Take a day trip via water taxi (many hotels and resorts offer private water taxis) to Caye Caulker.
Eat (Blue Water Hotel), drink (Palapa Bar & Truck Stop) and relax (everywhere).
Bonus: Although airfare at Southwest and Maya Island Air is non-refundable, tickets can be reused (Southwest up to a year and Maya Island up to six months), without any penalties or change fees, so travelers don’t have to feel locked into particular dates if plans change.

Black & White: a new Houston restaurant featuring two different menus (you guessed it – one side is black and the other is white), perfect for the couple who can’t ever decide what’s for dinner.
Located in the Heights with a sprawling patio perfect for Spring-time weather, Black & White will surely become one of the newest hot spots in Houston.
And to stick with the color scheme, be sure to check out the Gray Bar, which is located inside the restaurant between the “Black” and “White” seating areas. It features thoughtfully selected and reasonably priced wines from various regions available by the glass or bottle and a new light bites menu.
The concept here is really unique and cool. If you get a chance and they’re not too busy, ask for Claudia as your server – she was amazing and helped us select from all the delicious menu choices!
Just a few of our recommendations:
Mahi Mahi Salpicón: Grilled Mahi Mahi chopped with onion, green tomatillo, serrano chili, cilantro with a soy and orange sauce. $12
Tuna Tostadas: Chipotle mayo spread, covered with delicate cuts of tuna tataki marinated in Ponzu sauce with thin slices of avocado and fried leek. $11
Costa del Sol Mahi Mahi: Seared Mahi Mahi with capers butter and served with mashed potatoes and ratatouille. $24
Did someone say happy hour?
Don’t miss Black & White’s Wine Down Wednesdays, which features 1/2 off select bottles of wine. Pair your vino with our Chuleton de Cerdo, a center cut pork chop drizzled with a Maker’s Mark demi glaze and served with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and we promise you will not be disappointed (photographed above via Black & White’s Instagram account).

Probably one of the strongest brunch games here in Houston has to go to PESKA. I’ll admit – brunch here is a little pricey. Until you realize everything you’re getting and the quality.
I’m typically a french toast and bacon kind of brunch gal, but every so often it’s a good thing to step out of your culinary comfort zone and that’s what brunch at PESKA was. For starters, it’s ALL YOU CAN EAT. Yes, all you can eat. Challenge accepted.
Brunch at PESKA is set up very uniquely with different stations, but in my opinion, this is not a buffet. Yes, all you can eat it great, but all of the food is prepared right in front of you and you can get it made exactly how you want it. There are at least four different kinds of ceviche, and if one of them has one tiny ingredient you don’t like, just ask nicely and the staff will make you a special one.
They have a raw bar (fresh market oysters for days!), jumbo shrimp, crab, french toast, pancakes, eggs benedict and so much more. Probably one of the best things about my previous experiences at PESKA is how incredibly knowledgable the staff is. When it comes to seafood and certain fish, sometimes I don’t know the difference, but they are always so quick to explain and give wine pairing recommendations, etc.
Plus, bottomless mimosas and sangria are only $6, so go ahead and splurge. You deserve it.
EAT ME – I’M FRESH
Oh, and they have a dessert table with about 20 different homemade desserts to choose from. This Sunday Funday was well worth every single calorie I put into my body and I can’t wait to do it again!
Brunch is only on Sundays from 11a – 3:30p and I recommend you get there early and stay as long as you can. Seriously, the seats are cushioned, so kick back and relax and get up 20 times for refills. The staff won’t judge you – I already tested out this theory, trust me!
Click here for their full menu and scroll down to Brunch Menu.
If you are interested in attending an Omarkase dinner or a private event, Dante Laugier, the event manager, will take great care of you. Call him 832.215.8736 or email him dante@peska.us.
Chris Myers – living (and loving) the dad life. (Photo: Sofía van der Dys)
AN INTERVIEW WITH CHRIS MYERS: BEING A HUSBAND AND FATHER KEEPS CHRIS MYERS HEALTHIER THAN ANY GAME EVER COULD
If you think being the center of a football’s offense is a tough job, you should see what it’s like being a father of four (all under seven). No one knows both of those job descriptions better than Chris Myers, former Houston Texan and now full-time dad. Myers had a successful career in the NFL spanning a decade (seven seasons with Houston, never missing a game), but realized his heart was with his family and helping others. Myers says he’s a very hands-on father and husband and never ashamed to tell people what he does with his spare time now. “I’ve been blessed where we are in life and want my kids to feel their parents are there for every accomplishment they reach,” he says.
The two-time Pro Bowler quickly realized retiring from the sport isn’t an easy road. “I’m an open book in regards to bringing to light what guys go through when ending their NFL career. It’s a bumpy road if you aren’t grounded in your life away from the field. I am lucky with a family that has always supported and kept me in a place where I was needed more than football needed me,” he shares. Myers is only a fraction of his former playing weight (he dropped 35 lbs in three months after retiring), and is focused on leading a healthy lifestyle – not just for himself, but his family.
“I never had a goal weight but wanted to change my diet and live a cleaner lifestyle. I am involved with a foundation called Blue Cure that promotes lifestyle changes that can help prevent cancer risk down the road. It has opened my eyes to how a lot of society is blinded to what we are doing to our bodies without even knowing it,” he says. “Your body is a machine and if you put bad fuel into it it’s going to perform like it,”he says.
Myers hits the gym about 4 times a week, just in a different capacity. He works closely with Dose Khan, Leo Johnson and Jeremy Davis at Nine Innovations (the gym Arian Foster and brother Abdul helped start). “They helped transform the way I train to fit my lifestyle after ball. Focusing on cardio, core stability and stabilization has really helped me get in the best shape possible considering the shape my body is in from 10 years in the NFL,” he says. The competitive edge of the NFL may be in his rearview mirror, but Myers has found competition within himself. “I try to beat my previous time on a specific run. Challenging yourself keeps a sense of competitiveness in your routine. That’s one of the things you lose when you retire – the test of competition every day. Implementing it into other areas of your life helps more than you can imagine,” he adds.
Thinking about his workouts now vs. his playing days, he laughs. “I preached I would never be a guy to run miles upon miles. Fast-forward a year into retirement and I run multiple miles every day. For me it really is the best way to get to where I want to be in regards to being in shape,” he says. His perfect Saturday: golf when possible, taking the kids to the park, tee ball and the Zoo.
It’s not all organic shopping and hill sprints that create a healthy lifestyle for Myers. “Life is full of negativity and if you can provide positive energy and approach life with a glass half-full mentality, I’m a firm believer karma will come back around,” he says.
KICKER: We asked Myers to fill in the blank: I wish more people in the world would PAY IT FORWARD.
The Myers family: Jenny, his wife, Makenna 6, Cailin 4, Keane 3, and Conor 1.
