Reasons to Celebrate This Holiday Season

Stats on depression during the holidays break my heart. I know how hard it is to feel alone and not be with family during this supposed “festive” time, but I wanted to share a few reasons we can all celebrate this holiday season.

Even if you’re all alone and single AF, you’ve got reasons to celebrate (see #4). Plus, that means you don’t have to buy gifts for too many people, right?

I personally don’t think you need a reason to pop a bottle and partake in some Mumm Napa bubbles, but if you do need a few reasons, here you go…

  1. Christmas movie takeover – all day every day. Whether you’re a fan of The Elf, or a classic like Home Alone, there are so many on the boob tube every day you can watch. Here is a list of the top 50 Christmas movies of all time, in case you need some inspo.
  2. Friends and/or family. If you’re without family, remember that friends are the family we choose (sorry for the corny line I once saw on a pillow, but it is really true). During the holidays, people are usually in more of a loving, giving and sharing mood, so don’t hesitate to reach out to someone near and dear.
  3. A New Year – A clean slate is about to start. Whether you’re a regular resolution’er or not, knowing there’s a fresh start on the horizon is reason enough to celebrate.
  4. Alone time. Opposite of #2, sometimes the holidays are the perfect time to catch up on some alone time when friends and family are busy running around like crazy folk. Relax and take some time out for yourself – binge on movies (see #1), drink some champs for no reason at all, and take a bubble bath. Plus, if you live at The Millennium Kirby or The Millennium High Street, you will be comfy and cozy this holiday season.
  5. I’m not a big shopper (believe it or not!), but the end of the year is synonymous with big sales – whether you’re looking for a new car, a leather mini skirt or a new TV for the Super Bowl – the sales are on fleek. Plus Apt2B is always having great end-of-year deals on decor and apartment furniture. (I guess you know you’re an actual adult when buying furniture excites you more than shoes.)

And since we’re speaking of the holidays, bubbles make the perfect holiday gift (for you or your bestie).

Springbok: Houston Date Night Series

Blog
Springbok Houston (top floor)

Springbok Houston (top floor)

One of the best parts about living in Houston are all the date night options we’ve got, literally at our fingertips. It can be downright overwhelming to be honest, but here I’ve created this blog series to share some of my favorite Houston Date Nights.

We recently checked out Springbok Houston – a restaurant + bar + event space located in the heart of downtown Houston and just loved it. For starters, they had TV’s like a sports bar (yes, football was on!) but the food was so quality and not your typical greasy bar food.

The restaurant, which originated in Los Angeles, came to Houston and remained kind of a hidden gem. I can’t figure out why – maybe because downtown Houston has become so revitalized that there’s just too much to see and do in the area? Who knows? But I do know, this would be a fun date night spot for Houston lovers, especially if you’re looking for a different kind of sports bar.

When you think of appetizers at sports bars, now you can think Shrimp Ceviche, Deviled Eggs (with jalapenos and candied bacon!), Housemade Jerky or an Artisan Cheeseboard. I realize it sounds fancy, but it’s delicious – and affordable.

For your meal, try a traditional burger (but delicious!), Lamb Chops, Short Rib Curry, Wild Boar Sloppy Joe or a number of other colorful and meaty options. They even have various desserts to choose from (you know, besides stale cheesecake or a random nut brownie sundae like most places), and it’s big enough (there’s an upstairs and downstairs) for you and all your friends!

What other suggestions do you have for our Houston date night series? Would love to hear in the comment section below or email me: jayme @ theblondeside.com.

And speaking of date night – before every date night, I try my best to forgo the yoga pants and sweatshirts and try to dress up. Just before leaving the house, I do one final “full-length” glance in my Apt2B taft mirror. It’s my favorite area in the apartment – I call it my “selfie station.”

Ever since we moved back into “the city” from the burbs, I’ve been committed to learning how to love my city more, and that’s why I love living at the Millennium Kirby, because we are so close to so much! [SPONSORED]

The Art of the Handwritten Note

In my world, thank you notes are a given, but any handwritten note is just a signal of someone else taking time to say hello, that they were thinking of you.

I’m a big fan of handwritten notes – even if it says nothing but “hello, I  miss you!”

And once again, my Texas pride has gotten hold of me and I am just plain ole obsessed with these State Series notecards from Maya Brenner.

I’m a believer that a cute set of stationary, a good writing pen, and a warm cup of coffee can really set the tone for sending handwritten notes. I usually plop down at my coffee table, with my dogs by my side (usually bothering me) and an inspirational coffee mug filled to the brim.

I typically spend about 20 – 3o minutes writing out letters to my friends, my family and even sometimes new editors I am trying to pitch. We live in a world we’re so accustomed to getting thousands of emails and the only “real” mail we get these days, as adults, are bills. BOO.

Here are just a few reasons to send a simple handwritten note:

  • To say thank you
  • To say I’m thinking of you
  • To say get well
  • To say congrats
  • To let someone know some good news
  • To let someone know they are awesome – you never know when a positive note might hit their mailbox. In my experience, I get the best mail at the worst times – usually thanks to one of my best friends, Sarah. (Plus, she usually sends gummy bears or gummy worms or some variation of s’mores and that’s just awesome too.)

(If you recognize the name, Maya Brenner is also where I got my Texas gold necklace, that I never-ever take off.)

Smile with Strength

Blog
View More: http://sarahvanderfordphotography.pass.us/lamm-16It seems every couple years in life, I kind of redefine what I think (notice how I didn’t say what others think) gives me strength and confidence.
At one time it was actually being physically fit, working out, and having a strong body. I felt confident and strong and unstoppable.
At another point in my life, I felt that strength and confidence were very closely tied to my work, my job title, and my salary. If I was making enough money to live comfortably, I felt confident in what I was doing.
But one thing that has made me feel confident no matter what stage of my life I’m in has been my smile.
Sure it’s not a perfect smile, but it gives me strength and confidence. Maybe it smile-quote-by-marilyn-monroe was one of those smile quotes we’ve been hearing since we were kids (“A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear”), but a smile goes a long way.
And keeping my smile healthy and bright is why I’ve partnered with Colgate so I can continue to #SmilewithStrength, through all of life’s ups and downs and inconsistencies (because trust me, there are plenty).
Check out Smile with Strength for info, including some pretty rad workouts and tips.
