This is Abbey

When people find out I have a dog with as much as I travel, they always have the same reaction. As if (Clueless voice) I’m some bad dog mom for always leaving my dog and it must cost a fortune (maybe both are just slightly true).

But one of the reasons I’m lucky enough to work as a travel writer is the team of people/resources behind me.

I fully realize that sounds super cheesy, but having a routine is super important to me – especially as much as I travel. Some months I’m on the road more than I’m at my apartment so taking care of a few things or having people I can count on (on a repeat basis) is ideal, like my dog-sitter.

It’s no stretch of the imagination to say that Denali has been around the block. (Remember when I moved to Hawaii and posted a Craigslist ad to have someone fly him back to Virginia so he could stay with my parents for a year? I paid half up front and the other half was payable upon receipt of the dog in VA, which was slightly genius since my mom had to pay the other half!) It’s also no stretch of the imagination that though he’s an easy dog, that at 14-years-old, he’s kind of a grumpy old man and likes a routine (who doesn’t?)

That’s why I was stoked when I was personally introduced to Houston dog-walker and dog-sitter Jerri (who is the mom to Abbey, shown to the left). She actually lives next-door to a good friend of mine and he introduced us, and Denali had such a great time. He was around other dogs, he was well taken care of and he didn’t want to come home when I was ready to pick him up!

Having someone like Jerri who I can trust with Denali and give him the cuddly attention he needs makes it so much easier to pick up and go for travel assignments. Book Jerri on Rover.com (or request her rates or anything else you might want to ask her), especially before she books up for the holidays. Who knows – maybe our pups will get to stay at “camp” together!

Orangetheory Fitness Heads to The Woodlands

To all my readers (and friends IRL), add the date October 27th to your calendars because my favorite fitness folks (Orangetheory Fitness, aka OTF) is heading to The Woodlands.

This will be the 13th Orangetheory Fitness studio in the Greater Houston area, and the first studio in The Woodlands.

If you read any of my fitness posts or follow me on Instagram, you already know I’m obsessed with OTF and the high-intensity (not to mention scientifically designed) workouts they offer.

I especially love the rush it gives me knowing if I hit 12 splat points (they have unique lingo, I must admit), my body will continue to burn calories up to 36 hours after my workout. That’s enough to push me past what I think might be my limit for the day just knowing my work at that very moment could prove even further benefits.

The new fitness studio in The Woodlands will feature 34 workout stations and  3,900 square feet, so you’ll have plenty of space to burn those calories before the holidays (like my birthday, just to name one) kick in.

It’s rare for me to workout for 60 minutes and feel like I’m done (i.e. worked out enough already), but after one of these heart-rate based classes, I literally couldn’t go any harder if I tried. I love being able to knock out such an intense workout in 60 minutes a few times a week and then carry on with my day (after a shower, obvi!).

The Woodlands studio will be located at 4747 Research Forest Dr., Suite 445, The Woodlands, TX 77381 in the Cochran’s Crossing Shopping Center.

And if you’ve never been, your first workout is FREE (just mention The Blonde Side).

My fitness hack: I truly think you’ll love it, but with all gyms and fitness studios, I always suggest giving it three tries before you decide against it (but if you decide after one session that you love it, sign up before you talk yourself out of it!). It’s the whole “fish out of water” mentality, and I know it takes me a few times to feel comfortable in a new training environment.

If you want to follow OTF The Woodlands on social media, check them out on Facebook and Instagram.

Lip Love (Thanks Dr. Roehl)

Blog

Before & After: Lips

I have a confession: there are things about my body and image I don’t love.

Now that we’ve gotten that dirty little secret out of the way, I’ll tell you the one thing that’s always bothered me: my lips. And now that the aging process is alive and well, my tiny lips have gotten even tinier!

According to doctors, our lips are a lot like our skin and affected the same way as we age – we start to lose collagen and that natural plumpness (if you had any to begin with) which results in thinning lips and sagging skin, among other things.

Relax, I’m not trying to go all Kylie Jenner on y’all, but when I posted on a previous Instagram story that I was visiting Dr. Kendall Roehl at Memorial Plastic Surgery for lip fillers, I got a lot of feedback.

It’s funny because every guy (about 20) that commented said things like “No, don’t do it!” or “you don’t need those,” or “don’t be that girl!” and every woman that commented (about 10-15) said “I’ve been doing mine for years, I love it!” or “I can’t believe you’re announcing that – my boyfriend doesn’t even know I get mine done!” and similar.

Here’s the thing – getting lip fillers is simple and easy, and not super painful (though full disclosure: it’s not comfortable by any means). From the second I got injections, I already had a little extra pep in my step, and just felt better. For some, that’s wearing a new sweater or hitting the mall, for me it’s a small change in my appearance. Once the swelling went down (maybe a day or two), I was rocking my favorite lipsticks and just had more confidence. Plus, it’s an immediate change, which I loved.

If you’re looking to get a similar procedure, here are my suggestions:

–       Go to a board-certified physician (Dr. Roehl is Board-Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery).

–       Go to someone with experience in what you’re getting done. Don’t be someone’s Guinea Pig. Dr. Roehl has more than 15 years of experience, specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face, breast and body. When choosing a doctor, plastic surgery is similar to that of an orthopedic – you wouldn’t necessarily get shoulder surgery by a doctor that specializes in ankles. It doesn’t mean they aren’t competent, but don’t you want someone with expertise in that exact area?

–       Go to someone who listens to what you want. I repeated over and over that I wanted something natural, and Dr. Roehl and her staff listened. They weren’t trying to push something unnatural on me and even consulted with me afterwards to make sure I was happy with my results.

–       If you have a history of cold sores (which no one likes to talk about, obvi), tell your doctor. They will likely prescribe something before you get your procedure so you don’t have a breakout, which is common.

–       If you bruise easily, be sure to get Arnica (the office usually has it for less than $20 or any drugstore) to help with the bruising.

–       Go to your appointment/consultation with a photo of something you like. This will help show your doctor and his/her team the look you’re going for. A key here – they’ll also be able to tell you if what you want is realistic.

A message to the nay-saying men out there: I’d be willing to bet you’ve dated or kissed a girl that has had injections and you didn’t even know it because again, I’ll say, not everyone goes overboard with simple procedures like this. As I’d like to think in my taste and Dr. Roehl’s work, a natural upgrade is all we were going for. (Read more when I wrote about lip injections before for Elite Daily.)

If you’re interested, The Memorial Spa (the Houston location) is running 20% off lip filler injectables from now until November 30, 2017 along with a few other rejuvenation specials.

America’s Box: I Love Mail

Blog

America’s Box Monthly Subscription

It’s no secret I love getting mail. My mom used to send me mail all the time, but she’s slacked off a little lately. Every time she’d send me mail, it’d have a book of stamps (a logical and friendly reminder to send her mail) and a $5 Panera gift card. PS: I think Panera is the worst food on the planet, but that’s for another day. But regardless, it was mail and I loved it.

I’m also a sucker for subscription boxes. Usually. It’s just a nice treat to get a box full of goodies (that already interest you) each month, when you’ve kind of forgotten. They always happen to be delivered in between a bunch of random bills, so how can you not love these things?

Recently I subscribed to America’s Box. Even though I personally feel our country is in a state of disarray and confusion (no, this has nothing to do with politics, nor is it asking for your unsolicited rule political comments!), but I love America.

October is the tailgating themed box, complete with a set of reusable red solo cups. If you saw how excited I got when I saw those, you’d know that the country girl in me is still alive and well!

Keep this American-made subscription box in mind for the upcoming holiday season. Did you know that if American’s spent $64 of their holiday spending on American Made Products it would create 200,000 jobs? That’s pretty phenomenal, no matter what political party you side with.

For just $29.99/month (or you can spend $49.99 and splurge for the VIP box,) you’ll received a monthly box filled with themed products made only in America (even the box and packaging are made in America!).

What subscription (boxes, magazines or anything else) do you just love? Tell me in the comment section below, maybe I’ll join in on the fun!
