Cross-Training Your Brain: Athletic Drills That Improve Gaming Performance

Blog, Fitness

Ever wondered if your workout routine could actually make you a better gamer? It might sound like a stretch, but science and a growing number of pro gamers say otherwise. The connection between physical training and digital performance is real. Whether you’re sniping enemies in an FPS or strategizing in an intense MOBA, your body and brain need to be in sync. Quick reflexes, sharp focus, and the ability to stay cool under pressure aren’t just born they’re built, and athletic drills can help.

Reaction time, hand-eye coordination, and mental endurance are all critical to outplaying your competition. These aren’t your average workouts; they’re targeted drills that challenge your mind as much as your muscles. So if you’re ready to grind smarter, not just harder, let’s explore how a few sprints, squats, and shuttle runs might just be your secret weapon for the next match.

The Science Behind Physical-Digital Performance

The connection between athletic activity and gaming prowess isn’t coincidental. When you engage in physical exercise, your brain releases a cocktail of neurotransmitters that enhance cognitive function. These chemicals improve focus, reaction time, and decision-making capabilities, all critical skills for competitive gaming.

Research from the University of Illinois found that regular aerobic exercise increases the volume of brain regions responsible for memory and thinking. This neuroplasticity directly translates to gaming scenarios where split-second decisions determine victory or defeat.

Reaction-Enhancing Drills

Speed Ladder Training

The humble speed ladder, a staple in athletic training, offers tremendous benefits for gamers. The quick footwork required mimics the rapid decision-making process in gaming:

  1. Set up a speed ladder on any flat surface
  2. Practice basic in-and-out patterns for 30 seconds
  3. Rest for 15 seconds
  4. Complete 5 sets

This exercise improves neural pathways responsible for reaction time. Many professional esports teams have incorporated ladder drills into their training regimens, recognizing the transfer of skills to gaming performance.

Ball Reaction Drills

Tennis ball reaction drills sharpen visual processing and hand-eye coordination:

  1. Stand facing a wall, holding a tennis ball
  2. Throw the ball against the wall
  3. Catch with alternating hands
  4. Increase difficulty by standing closer or using smaller balls

These exercises directly translate to improved target acquisition in first-person shooters and faster reactions in fighting games. The neural adaptations happen surprisingly quickly, with many gamers noticing improvements within weeks.

Endurance for Extended Gaming Sessions

Marathon gaming sessions demand physical endurance that many players underestimate. The focus fatigue experienced during lengthy tournaments often stems from physical limitations rather than mental ones.

Incorporating moderate cardiovascular exercise even just 20 minutes of jogging three times weekly significantly improves oxygen flow to the brain. This enhanced circulation allows for sustained concentration during critical late-game scenarios when many competitors begin to falter.

Professional gamers, particularly those who compete in casino games like poker tournaments or who play Online gambling in NJ, understand that physical stamina directly correlates with mental endurance during high-stakes play.

Balance and Proprioception Training

Balance exercises develop proprioception—your body’s awareness of its position in space. This heightened spatial awareness correlates directly with improved in-game navigation and positioning.

Simple balance exercises include:

  • Single-leg stands (30 seconds per leg)
  • Yoga poses focusing on equilibrium
  • Balance board training (starting at 5 minutes daily)

Elite gamers often use these techniques before tournaments to activate the vestibular system, which controls spatial orientation and balance. This activation primes the brain for the complex spatial calculations required in three-dimensional game environments.

Hand Dexterity Exercises

Gaming demands exceptional finger dexterity and hand coordination. Physical therapists recommend these exercises to enhance fine motor control:

  • Finger taps on tables (30 seconds per hand)
  • Rubber band resistance training between fingers
  • Grip strengtheners (3 sets of 10 repetitions)

These exercises improve the neural connections between your brain and hands, reducing input lag between thought and action critical in competitive gaming where milliseconds matter.

Cognitive-Physical Integration

The most effective training programs integrate cognitive challenges with physical movement. For example:

  1. Set up five numbered cones in random positions
  2. Have a partner call out numbers
  3. Sprint to the corresponding cone as quickly as possible
  4. Return to start position between each call

This exercise combines cardiovascular training with decision-making pressure similar to gaming scenarios. The physical exertion under cognitive load builds mental resilience that translates directly to high-pressure gaming situations.

For those looking to track their progress, various fitness apps offer specialized programs for gamers focusing on these cognitive-physical connections.

Recovery and Sleep Optimization

Perhaps the most underrated aspect of physical training for gamers is recovery. Sleep quality directly impacts reaction time, decision-making, and emotional regulation during gameplay.

Studies show that athletes who maintain consistent sleep schedules demonstrate 9% faster reaction times than those with irregular patterns. For competitive gamers, this difference can be decisive.

Simple recovery practices include:

  • Establishing a consistent sleep schedule
  • Implementing a 30-minute digital detox before bedtime
  • Using contrast therapy (alternating hot and cold showers) to improve circulation

These recovery techniques allow the brain to consolidate the neural adaptations gained through physical training, creating lasting improvements in gaming performance.

Implementing Your Cross-Training Program

Start with a conservative approach of three 20-minute training sessions weekly, incorporating elements from each category discussed above. Track your gaming metrics before and after implementing your program to identify which exercises yield the greatest benefits for your specific gaming style.

Remember that consistency trumps intensity. A moderate, sustainable routine will produce better results than sporadic high-intensity sessions that lead to burnout.

By embracing this physical-digital connection, you’ll develop competitive advantages that extend beyond traditional practice methods. The next evolution in gaming performance isn’t found in hardware upgrades or more practice hours, it’s in the untapped potential of athletic training for digital competition.

Before and after photo of blonde girl showing results from fasting mimicking diet

Prolon Diet, Prolon Reviews and Prolon Discount Code For 15% Off

Blog, Fitness, The Blonde Side

I’ve never been a huge fan of diets and fads until I was planning my elopement back in 2021. I tried a few things, worked out extra hard at Shred415 Castle Rock, tried to eat clean(er), and cut out alcohol and sweets, but it wasn’t until a friend recommended the Prolon diet that I saw actual results. And fast results. In fact, I saw results in just 5 days, which is way more manageable than a few months.

Prolon Diet Updated October 2024 – I have done the Prolon diet five times and always love the results. I love to do the Prolon diet before or after a vacation. Usually before a beach vacation, it helps me to reset, or after a trip to Vegas, it allows my body a little reset. I do anywhere from the 1-day Prolon fast to the 5-day Prolon fast-mimicking diet.

What is the Prolon Diet?

It’s a fast mimicking diet, and in my own words, it’s still eating a little bit of food, taking extra supplements and more that tricks your body into thinking it’s fasting for all the benefits fasting has, but you’re still eating, at least a little. You can do this with minimal food that is researched and gone through extensive clinical trials, so it’s not only safe, but effective weight loss results.

In Prolon’s words, “This 5-day meal program provides scientifically researched micro- and macro-nutrients in precise quantities and combinations that nourish you, but are not recognized as food by your body and therefore mimics a fasting state!”

“The fasting mimicking diet was created as means of finding a sweet spot between too much and too little food. This approach to eating was pioneered by Dr. Valter Longo, a biogerontologist and cell biologist at the University of Southern California who has conducted extensive research into food restriction and how it may influence health and longevity. Based on the findings of his research, Longo founded the L-Nutra technology company and developed the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet to help consumers get with the fasting mimicking program,” via U.S. News.

The number one benefit I was with the Prolon diet was weight loss and reduced bloating before my wedding, which was a fast and easy way to drop some pounds before our elopement. Other Prolon diet benefits include:

  • Promotes Cellular Renewal
  • Supports Metabolic Health
  • Enhances Clarity and Performance
  • Fat Focused Weight Loss – the average person loses 5lbs with the 5-day fast mimicking diet, but from my experience it was mostly belly fat, as it still protect lean body mass

My Quick Results With The Prolon Diet

Did you see my Prolon before and after photo above?

I did the Prolon diet and it felt so much easier than juice cleanses I’ve done in the past. As you can see from my Prolon before and after photos, I dropped some major stomach bloating in five days and you can see a little more definition in my abs.

I thought the Prolon diet was easier than juice cleanses for a few reasons. I enjoyed “cooking” my soups on the stovetop (though it’s not required). The time spent making my lunch and dinner added to the ritual of eating, plus soup felt more like food than drinking juices. Crackers and olives also come with the diet, but unfortunately I don’t like olives. Crackers while on a juice cleanse aren’t a thing, so there were many benefits. I also found I could go about my daily life with the Prolon fasting mimicking diet and didn’t need urgent bathroom breaks like I did with juice cleanses. I dropped about 7lbs doing the Prolon diet, and it was easy to transition back to real food, which was important since we were heading to Las Vegas where we were eloping.

I also found the Prolon diet incredibly easy to follow. The box came with clear instructions and each day had its own box, which had teas, supplements, crackers, each soup, and more so you didn’t have to guess what you needed for each day.

Can You Workout On The Prolon Diet?

I think anytime you make big changes to your diet, you should be careful when it comes to working out, at least soup on kitchen table with crackers and computer screenfor heavy cardio. Prolon advises not to work out extra hard and listen to your body, but I kept doing my HIIT classes daily, I just didn’t push as hard. I was pleasantly surprised by how much energy I had to workout while doing the Prolon diet, even though I didn’t run as hard as I normally do.

Here’s what their website says about exercising while on the Prolon diet: “While exercise can help use up available blood glucose and move a person into a ketogenic, fasting state, vigorous exercise can stress the body and we do not recommend intense exercise during ProLon. So, while fasting, keep your activity light and do things like walking, yoga, and stretching.”

Listen to your body as you ease back into exercise after fasting. If it feels too much, it probably is. Don’t push yourself too hard and keep the intensity at a manageable level. Remember, your body needs to recover after fasting, so it may take a few days for you to get back to the level you were at before the fast.

Prolon Diet Reviews

My friend Braidee (Houston’s best nurse injector!) is the one who turned me on to the Prolon diet, and she’s done it a few times. Here’s what she had to say about the Prolon diet:

“Prolon is such a great program! After the 5 days, I always feel and look my best. I like how each box is packaged individually and there is guidance for each day. In my opinion day 1 and 2 are the toughest but once you get to day 3, you start to get some energy back. My best tip for the Prolon diet is to ration your kale crackers.”

Have you tried the Prolon fast? I’d love to hear your honest feedback in the comments or shoot me an email.

I did the Prolon diet before my wedding and loved the results

My Transition After Prolon’s 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet

As I mentioned, I did Prolon to drop stomach bloat before my elopement. I did a 5 day fast mimicking diet Monday – Friday, and my plane left Tuesday the next week, with our elopement on Thursday.

Saturday and Sunday I ate pretty light and still kept a pretty clean diet – i.e. no Crumbl cookies or fast food. On Monday night I drank a glass of wine, well, because duh. Tuesday and Wednesday I had one or two glasses, and we went to dinner both nights. I had regular size meals and we ate sushi one night. I didn’t go crazy, but I also didn’t hold back, and I was fine. I was afraid all my hard work would be gone by the time Thursday came for the wedding, but my bloat stayed off for at least a week or two. I was 10/10 impressed with the Prolon results.

Tips For Making The Prolon Diet Work For You

  • It’s no secret I’m a bit of a wine lover, so going without wine for five days was tough. I found putting La Croix or sparkling water in a large wine glass helped.
  • Do it with someone else. If you live with someone and they are eating their normal diets, this can be tough. Ask your partner or roommate or friend at the gym to do it with you and hold each other accountable.
  • Check your schedule before you start the Prolon diet. I planned out my 5 day Prolon diet in advance, but if it’s your best friend’s birthday or something big is going on, it’s going to make it tough to stick to the Prolon diet. The good thing is the boxes have a pretty long time for expiration, so order it, and do it during a 5 day span you know you can make it.
  • Find something to fill your time during meals. Maybe you want to read or take a longer lunch break to thoroughly enjoy your Prolon soup or go for a walk listening to your favorite podcast. Sit down and make it feel like dinnertime.

Get Prolon’s fast-mimicking diet at a major deal by using your FSA or HSA. This allows you to buy ProLon products with pre-tax dollars, resulting in a net savings of 30-40%m which is a huge savings!

To use your HSA or FSA to buy ProLon, you’ll need to enter the debit card from it and take a quick health survey, but I am all about saving money and you can STILL use my Prolon discount code Jayme with these tax savings! My Prolon discount code is usually stackable on their other offers, so don’t be afraid to try it out.

    Running HIIT Shoes in white

Gift these running shoes for the holidays

running shoes, and I love these On Cloud shoes. Getting them at Nordstrom is key because not only do they offer a price match guarantee, you can wear these and try them out and return them if you don’t like their fit. Most retail places will not allow you to return shoes once you wear them, so I always recommend getting running/HIIT shoes at Nordstrom for that exact reason (price: $149.99 and tons of colors to choose from).

$300-$500 Fitness Gift Ideas:

  • Apple Watch: Having an Apple watch has really been a game changer for my fitness game. They  range from $399 and up, but I have the most basic one and it has all the functions you could want and need. I also recommend getting a fun Apple watch band on Amazon since you have more options at super reasonable prices.
  • Core Adjustable Dumbbells: These are amazing, especially if you are limited to how much space you have for workout gear.

Activewear Gift Ideas For Fitness Lovers:

  • A VIP Membership To Fabletics: This is the gift that keeps on giving! As someone who needs constant motivation to workout, I PROMISE new workout gear will give the extra push to workout and make an appearance, even if it’s only for your home-gym. Learn more about how the Fabletics VIP Membership works.
  • Lululemon On Sale: This is my best-kept secret to get brand-new lululemon at a discount, it’s their “We Made Too Much” tab, but the only note is this tab is FINAL SALE. Make sure you know the size before you get this gift someone because they do not take returns on this stuff.
  • Carbon38: This is probably my favorite website to order activewear from and as long as you order $100+, it’s free shipping and free and easy returns. They run sales pretty often too, but be careful because their site wide sales are usually final sales, which is hard when you are gifting activewear.
  • Athleta: Another great website and store to buy workout gear for men and women. I also love
    neutral colored spiral hair ties

The best hair ties for working out

that Athleta has a try-it-out policy and you can return workout clothes that don’t work for you AFTER you’ve worn them in the gym. This is practically unheard of. Do your leggings fall off when running? Well you can return them! Does the arm chafe you when lifting? Well you can return that too.

High- End Gifts For The Fitness Lover:

  • Peloton Bike – I just got one and so far am all about it. There are a lot of accessories you can also get as a gift for someone who already has the bike. If you do get this, be sure to ask about a Military/Veteran’s Discount, which saved us a few hundred dollars.

Denver Local Fitness Gift Ideas:

  • Gift cards for medical massages or chiropractic care at this Littleton chiropractor. Both Jason and I go to Ultimate Health Medical Clinic, and I highly recommend the medical massages here if you are local.
  • A gift card or membership to Shred415 in Castle Rock. This place feels like home, and if you know someone (or for yourself) who needs motivation and an amazing community, I highly recommend Shred415. Also, if you’re local and want to take a class together, your first class is free so let me know and I’ll try to join you! Note: this is a franchise so even if you’re not in the Denver area, I highly recommend this gym.

Core Adjustable Dumbbells – Product Review

Part of my job (and my hobby if I’m being honest) is reviewing fitness and workout-related products and adding to our home gym. After COVID hit, having things like  dumbbells and kettlebells at the house and being able to livestream workouts was a game changer. It helped keep my workout routine going strong.

I wish I had these adjustable dumbbells back then, but better late than never. Jason and I both use these adjustable weights and not only do they look good in our home gym, they don’t take up a ton of space.

These adjustable dumbbells crunch 10 sets of weights into one compact set, ranging from 5 to 50 pounds, so plenty of weights for those heavy lifting days and also for those with HIIT training. Get the adjustable dumbbells on Amazon.

These adjustable dumbbells mimic the shape of a traditional dumbbell, and they also offer a rapid-speed adjustment mechanism for quick, smooth transitions during workouts as well as the compact, space- saving design for a home gym.

Core Adjustable Dumbbells And Traditional Dumbbells Price Comparison

The compact set is available for $379, and which is a heck of a good deal, because right now dumbbells are going for around $1.40/lb, which would be around $550, plus a weight rack to hold the dumbbells, which could range from $400 – $1200 and take up more space.

Core Adjustable Dumbbells Product Specs

  • Fully adjustable from 5 – 50 pounds in 5 pound increments
  • Space-saving design with compact footprint—14.5in (L) x 7.9in (W) x 7.5in (H)
  • Quick-turn twist handle design for rapid weight adjustments and dual-sided weight selection window
  • Innovative design replicates the look and feel of a traditional dumbbell, with a compact starting length of 9.3 inches long
  • Contoured, textured and soft-grip handle design for comfortable and secure grip control
  • Aluminum weight cradles for easy access and secure storage, fully compatible with the Core Home Fitness Dumbbell Stand (sold separately)

The Best Free Fitness Apps

Whether you’re looking for something to get you through this quarantine 15 or prefer to workout at home, my travel and time on the road has had me relying on fitness apps for quite a while. Now that I’m only able to workout at home, thanks to this pandemic, I’ve added a few new favorite fitness apps to my rotation.

When your living room is your gym, you can still see results, I promise. Finding motivation is another thing though, so hopefully these free fitness apps will help motivate you. You probably will find one you love more than others, so save that and make it front and center on your phone, and set workout alerts and reminders.

5 of the Best Free Fitness Apps

  1. FitOn: I was watching some random Denver news show and this app came on, so I downloaded it. This is literally a “full gym in your pocket” like they claim. They may have a pay version, but the one I’ve been using for the past month is completely free. It takes about 5 minutes to sign up (they want your weight, your favorite type of workout, etc.) so they can create a semi-customized workout plan for you. I have loved all the workouts and truth be told, I did one of the HIIT workouts, and it was the first time in SIX WEEKS I was sore the next day. I think that is really saying something! BONUS: You can snag a work out with some special guests like Gabrielle Union and Jonathan Van Ness. Almost a full year into quarantine and I still use this one regularly.
  2. Nike Training Club: I have blogged about this favorite free app for quite some time, but it’s a constant in my rotation. I love this app because like many of them, you can browse by muscle group, workout type (i.e. endurance, mobility, strength, yoga) or by equipment (for the times when you’re in a hotel room with no weights, etc.). This helps me get straight to the workout I need without going down a rabbit hole trying to find the right one. You can also browse by “short workouts” to find workouts as short as 5, 6 or 7-minutes long, perhaps if you have a few minutes before jumping in the shower, or before heading to happy hour!
  3. Map My Fitness by Under Armour: There are some great, free preset workouts you can use on this app, but I think the biggest benefit here is for people who are runners or who are motivated by data. You can track your progress at the gym, compare your run to last week’s run, and more. You can also initiate challenges with friends and serve as a way to motivate you both.
  4. Adidas Training by Runtastic: This is another great free fitness app that is easy to use. Any

Free Fitness Apps To Download Now

fitness apps with easy-to-find “no equipment workouts” are usually my favorites, because sometimes I’m at a park and have 20-minutes I want to workout. I can’t always carry dumbbells around in my gym bag, right? They start by asking what your fitness goal is – you can choose from get fit, stay healthy, lose weight, or build muscle. As elementary as this may sound, it’s a huge way to set yourself up for success. Once you answer a few simple questions, they “optimize” your workout plan based on your answers. I also love Adidas for running shoes, and love their online sales. They also have an app specific to runners where they partner with Runtastic, so check that out if you’re looking to make some strides as a runner.

  5. 7 Minute Workout: For those who say they don’t have time to workout, the joke’s on you. This workout takes (you guessed it) only 7 minutes, and it’s another no equipment workout. If you don’t want to take my word for it, this app has a 4.8 rating out of 65k reviews, so others are big fans of this free fitness app too. When my knee is acting up, I choose the “no jumping” workouts, to ensure I can make it through the entire 7-minutes. If you find you have extra time, try doing a few in a row and go beast mode.

Here’s another article with 33 fitness apps to check out in 2021 like Stacked, which is a free weight training app that I’ve become a fan of. Also check out Shred415 in Castle Rock if you’re looking for in-person HIIT classes in Castle Rock. I am so lucky my gym is back open and the fact they do an awesome LIVESTREAM, which I highly recommend. It’s a small fee per class online, but well worth it.

* Bodypeace: This is an app devoted to wellness and fitness, created by a Houston gal pal named Lizzie. There is a paid version for this, but there are also some great freebies, and what I love most about this app is the signup process. Not only is it quick and easy, but they ask what you do a lot of – not just dance, cardio, HIIT, etc. but do you sit at a desk all day or travel for work? She puts together easy to follow fitness routines that are good for you, more than just working out. *Note, this is a mostly paid app, but wanted to include it because supporting fellow boss babes who make wellness a priority is big!

Especially during quarantine, I encourage you to see what apps your friends and celebs you follow. Many of the normally pay-for fitness apps are offering 30-90 free trials, so it’s worth a shot. Also, I’m a firm believer in paying for your fitness if you need to. If you find an app that’s $13/month and it motivates and keeps you on track, I think that is $13 well spent. So spend this time trying out a few free apps, seeing if you can do online fitness competitions with friends and family and go from there.

Check out this free workout you can do at home, as long as you have a deck of cards. This is one of my favorites and it always kick my booty!

Good luck and stay strong.

Be sure to my blog post sharing workouts from home and apartment workout tips.

5 Reasons To Love Shred415 Castle Rock

5 Reasons To Love Shred415 Castle Rock

Finding a gym to call home is always a priority for me when I move somewhere new, so it’s no surprise I put more time into finding a new place to sweat it out in Castle Rock than I did in decorating and furnishing my new house. Like I said, priorities.

All that aside, I am so happy to have found Shred415 Castle Rock, my gym here in Castle Rock. It’s located in the Outlets at Castle Rock, which seemed odd at first. Luckily I just hit the gym and walk out without being tempted to shop.

Now that I’ve been a Shredder (their fun member lingo!) for almost two months and gotten my feet wet, I wanted to share 5 reasons to love Shred415 Castle Rock:

  1. Their instructors are the best of the best. Seriously, I love them all. Not only their attitude and motivation they shout out to you during your workout, but their ability to provide modifications, to know when you need a boost of encouragement through the microphone, or to know when they need to call you out for not working hard enough. Every one of these women (they may have male instructors, but so far, I’ve only had boss babes!) are so motivational and help keep me accountable.
  2. Classes are one and done. After I kick butt (or sometimes get my butt kicked) at this Castle  Rock gym for 60-minutes, I feel confident my workout for the day is done. I’ve tried other gyms or studios that are challenging, but then feel I have to run afterwards, or do abs or lift a bit. This 60-minute HIIT class hits all the hard parts and pushes you so hard, you leave knowing you’re done for the day. This is key for me, because I can only dedicate about an hour a day to get a good workout in. I don’t have time to workout a few times a day or workout and then have to go for a run later. This fits my schedule and my lifestyle more.
  3. They are involved in the Castle Rock community. This is important for so many reasons, but being a new Castle Rock resident, it’s a great way to meet others and participate in events and charities in my new community.
  4. They offer FREE classes. For starters, your first class is free. That’s awesome, but truth be told, it’s pretty standard. But this Castle Rock gym holds FREE outdoor community workouts each week – usually Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday and Sunday mornings at The MAC. So whether you’re on a budget or maybe can’t afford a gym membership right now, they are still leading FREE classes every week. I think that’s awesome.
  5. They use Woodway treadmills. To say I have bad knees is an understatement. I’ve had nine knee surgeries and my last one was about four years ago, and the absolute worst. I’ve been covering fitness for a while, and have always loved Woodway treads, but this is my first time using them regularly and I can see a difference (please don’t let this jinx my bad knees, please!). Woodway treadmills are known to have a lesser impact on your joints because the surface is comprised of shock-absorbing slats to lessen the impact when you hit the surface (i.e. your foot hits the belt over and over). Basically their rubberized slats absorb foot strike at the point of impact – giving the truest and natural running feel. Read more about the Woodway Difference from their website.

Those are just five of the reasons I love Shred415 in Castle Rock. I could go on, but I probably lost you a few paragraphs ago so I’ll stop.

For those who don’t know, this is how Shred works: Every Shred415 Castle Rock workout is divided into four 15-minute intervals, alternating between treadmill drills and strength training. You’ll select your weights and set your speed on the treadmill, and your instructor will challenge you to work up to your next level—at a pace that works for you.

Also, if you live in Castle Rock and ever want to join me at the gym, shoot me a message or call and sign up for a FREE class and mention my name (either Jayme or The Blonde Side works).

At Home Workout: With a Deck of Cards

Easy and fun at-home workout with a deck of cards

We are experiencing unprecedented times right now with this quarantine and I truly am sending you all warm wishes and positive thoughts (and yes, prayers too!).

Since gyms are closed, I wanted to reshare (here is the old fitness post) an easy and interactive at-home workout you can do with two simple things:

  1. Deck of Cards
  2. Positive Attitude

You can use your body weight for these exercises, or add weights (get creative like the Instagram videos you’ve probably seen using bottles of wine or Clorox as your weights, or a paper towel used as a slider, etc.) if you’d prefer.

Pick four exercises, then grab a deck of cards and flip them over one at a time.

♠️ = crunches

♦️ = jump squats

♥️ = pushups

♣️ = burpees

Whichever number is on the card, do that many of each exercise. For example, if you picked up a 4 of spades, you’d do 4 burpees, then turn the next card and repeat. A king of diamonds would be 10 jump squats.

I’ll be honest – I’ve done this a number of times and have yet to make it through the full deck. So in an attempt to NOT give up, give yourself a goal. Do the “game” for 20 minutes or say you’ll get through 20 cards. If you are doing the card game with two other people, you can also shuffle and split the deck up. Have fun with it.

You can also add lunges, bear crawls, tricep dips, frog jumps, mountain climbers, ab exercises like bicycles, bridges – the list is endless.

3 Weeks of Workouts in Denver

Blog, Fitness

Castle Rock’s Mini Incline

Going to a new city and need to find a new gym and network of workout buddies: scary or exciting?

For me, that’s pretty damn scary, but I also found excitement in this little project I did, so wanted to share.

Here’s what 3 weeks of workouts in Denver looks like. Technically it’s in and around Highlands Ranch, and varied workouts because I don’t have my Houston fit fam at SPENGA. This is also to show you that you don’t need a gym membership to get a good workout in — you can find it pretty much anywhere, and that you can try out a few gyms with a free class here and there, which I tried to highlight free gym classes in Highlands Ranch below.

Day 1: Philip S. Miller Park: Known to locals as the “mini incline” in Castle Rock, this is 200 steps up one time at the Colorado incline, which is tough for a newbie. For my first day, I walked up and trail ran down x3 (2.25mi), did 60 bench pushups + 60 bench dips.

Day 2: Rush Cycle: Here your first class is free if you sign up online. The class was led by Payton who had incredible energy and Jason actually came with me and took advantage of a free class for his first cycling class. Note: the Highlands Ranch Rush Cycle is now closed, but there are a few others in the area.

Day 3: barre3: I am no stranger to asking for free stuff, so I messaged them and they gave me

barre3 Highlands Ranch – mention me for a FREE class!

a free class! Class taught by Stephanie, the studio owner, and I loved the vibe here. “Don’t be afraid of the shake.” You can actually try barre3 in Highlands Ranch and mention me (Jayme) for a FREE class – or message me and I’ll go with you, because I am now a happy member here!

Day 4: Today I had sore legs and a slight hangover from the Old Dominion concert at Red Rocks so I did a quick 3-mile walk around Highlands Ranch Outdoors trail system (Marcy Gulch Trails) and called it a day. It is still crazy to me how much “free” and open space there is in Denver and Highlands Ranch to get a good hike or walk with a gorgeous view.

Day 5: Daniel’s Park Trail: 4.5-mile hike with views of Colorado Front Range. This is Denver’s Mountain Park in Douglas County, where we live and the trails and options are endless.

Day 6: Did the mini-incline in Castle Rock (see Day 1) with Jason before the Broncos game!

Day 7: barre3 again (again, don’t forget to mention me for a FREE class)

Day 8: Did a simple run/walk around the neighborhood

Hiking Daniels Park in Colorado

Day 9: Waterton Canyon: A beautiful walk/hike along the South Platte River. Along the way you’ll see wildlife, biking, fishing and get a healthy dose of Colorado fresh air.

Day 10: Roxborough State Park: Sunday morning hike along Carpenter Peak Trail, this is a short drive southwest of Denver and provides beautiful scenery. You must pay a park entrance fee or buy an annual pass, which we did. “With close to 4000-acres, Roxborough State Park is filled with dramatic red-rock formations, distinct plant communities and a variety of wildlife ranging from black bears to mule deer. Enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, trail running, photography, bird watching or one of our many programs and events. Whether you are new to the outdoors or an experienced outdoor enthusiast, Roxborough State Park has an opportunity for you,” their website states.

Day 11: barre3

Day 12: RTR Pilates (Rock the Reformer Pilates, via ClassPass): I found this via ClassPass, which is a a premiere reformer Pilates studio that offers group Pilates classes in the DC, Bethesda, McLean, and Highlands Ranch, Colorado areas. I didn’t love this class or setup, but that just shows there’s something different for everyone. Plus, I have a 3-class rule before deciding if like/don’t like a gym or studio.

Day 13: LFT Fitness (Live for This Fitness, via ClassPass): I found this jackpot of a Highlands

Coach Barry and The Blonde Side at LFT in Highlands Ranch/Littleton

Ranch/Littleton gym via ClassPass and have now become a member, I love it so much! For starters, it’s hard AF. It’s a tough workout – similar to CrossFit, but not. The gym is known as the “boom room” and there is a extreme sense of community here, which is great for being new to a city. I’d HIGHLY recommend you check this spot out – mention me (Jayme or The Blonde Side) for a FULL WEEK OF CLASSES FREE.

Day 14: barre3: Now my typical workouts each week consist of 1-2 classes at barre3 Highlands Ranch, 3 classes at LFT and at least 1-2 days outside in the Highlands Ranch trail system or hiking with Jason!

Day 15: Compass Fitness: I found this via ClassPass and the class I took was called Russian Roulette. I actually loved this gym – it was hard, fun and you were in and out. The only downfall, it was a bit too far from our house, so wasn’t an ideal gym on the regular, but if you’re near this spot, check it out!

Day 16: Garden of the Gods: Here we did some casual hiking bc I wasn’t as prepared but definitely plan to be back. “Garden of the Gods Park is a registered National Natural Landmark. Imagine dramatic views, 300′ towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies. This world-class Visitor & Nature Center and museum is the most visited attraction in the region with all new interactive exhibits,” the website states.

Jason and I tried Rush Cycle in Highlands Ranch

Day 17: LFT

Day 18: barre3

Day 19: LFT

Day 20: Row House in Highlands Ranch: Again, I took advantage of their first class free, and signed up for the Body class, which is the only class they offer that uses dumbbells (I used 3lb and 5lb weights) and Troy was a great instructor!

Day 21: Rush Cycle: Again, the Highlands Ranch location has closed but there are others nearby.

Shop some of my favorite workout spots:

lululemon is definitely one of my favorite places to get workout and “errand” clothes.

I wear the Adidas Ultraboost for most of my workouts/runs and couldn’t recommend them more. Or I love the Reebok CrossFit Nano for my LFT workouts or lifting weights (they are too stiff for me to run or do a lot of cardio in).

Carbon38 is also a favorite for workout and athleisure clothes.

I always have my water bottle with me (even when I’m not working out!).

And you can shop a ton of my favorite other spots here.

5 Reasons to Love SPENGA Montrose

Blog, Fitness

SPENGA | Houston, Montrose

If you’ve been keeping track, I’ve been posting about my love for SPENGA Houston (the Montrose location on Westheimer) for a few months now. For this fitness blog post, I thought I’d make it easy and share some of my top reasons for loving this heart-pumping 60-minute workout.

  • The instructors are amazing and will push you. I’ve found you can have the best gym and subpar instructors or vice versa. For me, it’s a winning combo to have a stellar gym with all the top equipment and the best instructors. My favorites at the Montrose SPENGA location are Roz, Nick and Skipper, but I can vouch that all the fitness coaches here are going to push you and give you a great workout.
  • Working out with friends. SPENGA makes it easy to workout with friends. In fact, if you want to try SPENGA (the Montrose location) for FREE with a friend or two, just give them a ring at 713.588.2315 and drop my name (The Blonde Side or Jayme) and you can both work out for free. It’s called accountability and I love it!
  • It’s for anyone. No matter your age or whatever else may be stopping you, SPENGA is a great workout for most people. I have too many knee and shoulder issues, but the instructors work closely with me for modifications so I don’t miss out or hurt myself. I’ve taken classes with people 15 years younger than me, 30 years older and men and women, so don’t be afraid to give it a go. Even if you haven’t worked out in 2 years – we all start somewhere. Remember that.
  • It packs a punch in just 60 minutes. I love the setup: 20 mins on the spin bike, 20 mins on the strength floor (think TRX, dumbbells, abs, and more) and then 20 mins of yoga/stretching. Most of us stay busy, so knocking out a killer workout in 60 mins is more than ideal. We all have 60 minutes to spare at least a few times a week.
  • The facilities. The SPENGA Houston location in Montrose is brand spanking new. The equipment is top-of-the-line and I love all the color coded aspects and decor (their BOSU balls are even the signature lime green — sorry, I’m a branding and marketing nerd!). The spin bikes are easy to set up, the strength floor has dedicated stations for everyone (so no fighting over the same weights) and the locker rooms have clean showers and lockers, so you can easily go before or after work or running errands. Again, no excuses.

Read these SPENGA frequently asked questions to learn more.

Also, my advice to those of you planning on setting New Year’s Resolutions to get in shape and start working out more – what’s stopping you from starting right now? You don’t need the 2020 calendar flip to get motivated and begin making positive changes. Call SPENGA — or any gym that you think will push you and work you hard — and put in some work for the remainder of 2019. Even if you’re going to be busy traveling or have to do all the holiday planning and cooking – working out will help you destress and I promise you’ll be glad you jumpstarted your workout!

Remember to call and mention me (Jayme or The Blonde Side) for your FREE class (call 713.588.2315) at the Montrose location only.
