Texan Institutions You Must Visit to Call Yourself a Texan
If you measure distance in hours not miles, you are definitely from Texas. This state spans 660 miles wide — a full 40% of the lower 48 — and in that space there’s plenty of room for variety. Here are the key sites, sights, and zeitgeists that make for the true Texas experience — and all the ways that people from here love to enjoy their native soil: taking in history, savoring local cuisine, raising a glass, buying things that only Texas does so well, and letting nature’s glory wash over us. So forget the Alamo (*gasp*), these are the locations that every real Texan knows must be paid pilgrimage.

While Florida in its entirety is pretty much at full capacity year-round thanks to the luscious beaches and booming atmosphere, there are still some breathtaking spots with lots of wiggle room left to be explored about two hours south of St. Petersburg on the Gulf of Mexico. Everyone already knows about the margarita vibes in Key West, but the vibes found throughout the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel (most notably Captiva Island) are much less crowded, and equally wanderlust-worthy. Indeed perfectly capable of handling any variation of your margarita request.
With nonstop flights offered from Houston-Intercontinental (IAH) to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), it’s easier than ever to get to your cheeseburger in paradise in just a few hours. There is so much to explore in the area, you’ll want to get a rental car (a cab from the airport to Captiva Island runs more than $70, so save some money by renting a car).
Plenty of room to explore – or do nothing. There’s more than 50 miles of white sandy beaches and 590 miles of shoreline, so you’ll have plenty of stuff to see and do – or do nothing at all but lounge around with a cocktail and/or good book. The sunsets here draw quite the crowd, so come early and stay late.
Stay like a celebrity. We all want Carrie Underwood’s legs, but what about her vacation style? The country powerhouse recently paid a visit to Captiva Island, at one of South Seas Island Resort’s luxurious private vacation homes. Guests can feel at home in a variety of accommodations, ranging from hotel rooms to condominiums and cottages to private villas and homes. The property is so large you’ll need a golf cart to navigate it and there are miles and miles of beaches not to mention wildlife preserves to keep you occupied.
Picture-worthy. Everywhere is Instagram-worthy, but you’ll definitely want to check out the “preppiest place on earth,” Boca Grande. Boca Grande is the heart of Gasparilla Island nestled off of southwest Florida’s Gulf coast, and is the unique and quaint locale that was Katharine Hepbrun’s temporary respite from paparazzi and autograph-seeking fans. It’s clustered around the old train depot and serves up a taste of Florida’s yesteryear. Boca Grande has evolved into a playground for discerning travelers and celebrities.
Have a few cold ones with $70,000 scattered around you. Home of the historic Cabbage Key Inn, Cabbage Key is a unique island that was purchased by highly acclaimed author and playwright Mary Roberts Rinehart in the 1930s. The home was later converted into a cozy inn with six guest rooms and an open-air restaurant, which attracts thousands of visitors each year. Cabbage Key is now wallpapered with signed dollar bills (more than $70,000 as of last count). The tradition began when a thirsty fisherman left his autographed bill taped to the wall, ensuring a cold drink the next time he stopped by. Talk about a man with a plan.
Celeb sightings always make vacations extra-memorable. The Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant has been a popular hotspot for celebrity sightings like Julia Roberts, Jimmy Carter, John F. Kennedy Jr. (whose dollar bill is hanging behind the main counter in the restaurant) and Ernest Hemingway, to name a few.
We promised margarita vibes and cheeseburgers in paradise, so…If you’re a Jimmy Buffett fan, Cabbage Key is rumored to be the spot that inspired his hit song, “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” transforming the diminutive inn into a world-famous attraction. Plus, the cheeseburgers and atmosphere are exactly as the song says.
The Island Cow Eatery is another great dining option with one of the most diverse menus. The Island Cow will be the place that reminds you to relax – you’re on island time. And we wouldn’t be surprised if you made more than one visit here during your stay. It’s that good.
A place for inspiration. Buffett’s hit song wasn’t the only big hit inspired in the area. When Anne Morrow Lindbergh visited Captiva Island and penned her famous book, Gift from the Sea, she wrote: “The beach was covered with beautiful shells and I couldn’t let one go by unnoticed. I couldn’t even walk head up looking out to sea, for fear of missing something precious at my feet.” There are more than 400 shell varieties of all shapes, sizes and colors, making it a seashell lover’s paradise.
You have to see it to believe it. One of Captiva Island’s most popular restaurants, The Bubble Room is a three-story venue decked out in nostalgic décor from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, and filled to the hoarder’s brim with outlandish décor featuring unique Christmas items, antiques, and Hollywood glam all rolled into one. The restaurant is nationally recognized for its quirky menu items, such as “Duck Ellington” and “Gone With the Fin,” in addition to its award-winning and incredibly oversized desserts, that are bigger than your actual head. It’s the most eclectic place you’ll ever have the pleasure of grabbing a meal – guaranteed. Pro tip recommendation – grab dinner at one of the many outside patios (opt for any variation of seafood that’s fresh) and then head to The Bubble Room for drinks and dessert after. And you’ll want to share your cake – take our word.

It’s no travel secret that Cabo is one of the best vacation destinations, especially from Houston, just a 2.5-hour flight out of the recently renovated Houston Hobby Airport or Bush Intercontinental. For starters, the airport is clean and efficient; the flights are direct and affordable (thanks to Southwest, United and Spirit), and the weather and beaches are perfect.
But once you’ve decided on Cabo as your beach destination, where to stay becomes tricky with 60+ hotel and resort options, each promising prettier beach views and tastier cocktails than the last. Pending your travel style, we’ve narrowed down our list to two of the best Cabo resorts. If you want to vacation like Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria, Jessica Simpson or Jessica Alba, read on.
Are you a traveler who appreciates tiny details and the utmost luxury available —think butlers and a 3:1 staff to guest ratio where everyone knows your name? Could you spend hours upon hours on a comfortable lounge chair, with mister bottles, complimentary foot rubs and a good book? If so, the One&Only Palmilla is for you.
Are you someone who needs constant movement and music during your beach getaway? Do you need interaction with other guests and a night scene? If so, check out The Cape, where they welcome you with a bottle of tequila in your room.
One&Only Palmilla: Ultimate luxury
The kind of luxury and attention to detail guests get at One&Only is stuff dreams are made of. Even at full occupancy, there are about three employees to every guest, which means you’ll get excellent service around the clock. Service so supreme, even Jennifer Aniston and Eva Longoria vacation here.
One&Only Palmilla is considered the creator of the Los Cabos mystique—the resort
The Blonde Side taking in all things Cabo
originally opened in 1956 as an exotic spot for Hollywood celebrities to hide was only accessible by private plane or yacht. The iconic resort reopened in 2015 after a full renovation after Hurricane Odile, and the luxurious touches are everywhere.
If you opt for transportation service from the airport to One&Only, the full-size and supremely clean SUV even comes with Wi-Fi – another hint of detail. You might not think that’s a big deal, but the drive in is pretty boring (just 20 minutes), so being able to check emails and send “landed safe” texts before you arrive to the resort is key. So then you can bask in paradise.
One&Only has Pelican Beach — one of the only swimmable beaches in Cabo. You’ll also be greeted with a beach concierge, free bottled water and misting bottles and top-notch service. Two free-form pools offer breathtaking views of the Sea of Cortez.
For ultimate relaxation, spend an afternoon at the Vista Pool, the adult-only infinity-edge pool where a pool concierge comes by to clean your sunglasses and even offer complimentary foot massages. Add a signature Serrano Margarita to your afternoon and you’re officially on vacation mode, partying like a celebrity.
The top five suites come with a dedicated butler and your own iPhone to stay in touch with him throughout your stay as well as your own personal golf cart and driver.
Guests in any of the oceanfront suites or private villas enjoy a taste of a signature tequila — Atalaje Reposado — made exclusively for the hotel and served in a terra cotta carafe with shot glasses and fresh limes and sea salt, just one of the many amenities your butler provides.
SEARED, the brand-new on-site steakhouse, offers such items as Kobe Tomahawk, grass fed New York Strip and Porterhouse, all displayed in a glass-walled meat cellar with a dry-edge curing room. The menu from noted chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten wows guests with unique dishes along with an extensive wine list, including local favorites and a dedicated wine sommelier to help find your new favorite.
The 22,000-square-foot spa offers a sense of seclusion with signature treatments in a private villa. You’ll need the relaxing afternoon after partaking in an afternoon of surf lessons with TropicSurf, the pioneer of “luxury surfing” – the same safe place where Matt Stafford and a few other NFL big names recently took lessons.
Another add-on luxury service is the 95-foot, four-cabin, luxury Catari Yacht. An on board culinary team is available to prepare tailored menus accompanied by the perfect margarita.
Upon departure, there are at least five staff sending you off. But as you drive away, you can’t help feel you were just voted off the island in some luxurious reality show, knowing others are still enjoying the best vacation you ever had. You will return, you repeat over and over.
Infinity pool at The Cape in Cabo San Lucas. Photo by Thomas Hart Shelby
The Cape, a Thompson Hotel: Trendy, sleek, and modern
The Cape is so modern that it graced the cover of Condé Nast Traveler’s “Hot List” May 2016 issue. The coveted property is situated in front of The Golden Arch, the distinctive Cabo landmark in a rock formation that erupts from the sea at the tip of the Baja Peninsula.
The resort is a sophisticated and new way to experience Cabo, taking in all the views, especially from the rooftop lounge and garden, which offers two open-air bars and is the only rooftop lounge in the area. The luxury hotel has two pools, but the one “to be seen at” is the infinity pool, which includes a swim-up bar and complimentary (first-come, first-served) cabanas with perfect views of Monuments Beach, the world-renowned surfers’ paradise.
Manta, the on-site restaurant, offers a diverse array of chef-driven food and beverage destinations (think homemade tortillas and locally sourced seafood) overseen by the award-winning executive chef Enrique Olvera, who studied at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park.
Guest rooms offer beachfront terraces with beautifully decorated hanging daybeds, making it the perfect spot to sip your morning coffee or partake in a few tequila shots before getting the night started. Speaking of tequila, all guests are welcomed with a custom tequila amenity, a 750ml hand-etched crystal bottle of Realeza Mexicana 100 percent blue agave tequila, produced and bottled exclusively for The Cape.
With the open-air lobby, checkout becomes a sad day looking down at all the beach and pool lovers still soaking up the sun (and tequila) in their personal cabanas. As you leave the resort, you’ll wonder why you didn’t book a longer stay.

Guide to Galveston: New attractions and old favorites offer lots to do on the island
With historic roots and a renewed energy, Galveston remains a weekend favorite for many Houstonians, less than an hour’s drive south of the city, located on the Gulf of Mexico. Sure, it may not be as exotic or luxurious as Belize or Cabo, but it’s a lot more affordable.
For starters, Galveston is home to 32 miles of beaches open year-round for recreation, so no matter how many times you’ve been, you probably haven’t even seen half of it. And 15 blocks of brand new beaches located on a stretch of the Seawall west of 61st Street, named Babe’s Beach after former Texas Rep. A.R. “Babe” Schwartz, were recently unveiled.
But there’s so much more to do than lounge on the beach.
Play Time
Aside from the obvious “play time” beaches are known for, new attractions are popping up around the island. The latest is the world’s tallest water coaster, aptly named MASSIVE, at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark. According to the website, “unlike a waterslide, a water coaster is designed to send riders on both downhill and uphill experiences.” Sounds fun to me.
If you’ve got kids (or are trying to relive your youth), another popular attraction along the beachfront is the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier amusement park, which stands over the Gulf of Mexico complete with 16 thrill and amusement rides, live entertainment, games, food and even a full-service restaurant.
Moody Gardens is one of those family-friendly attractions everyone has heard of, but there are new dimensions being added to the destination all the time. This family adventure resort is one of the most visited attractions and truly is a piece of paradise. And what kind of paradise would it be without a links-style, par-72 golf course with scenic views of the Bay?
Moody Gardens also features a Discovery Museum, 3-D and 4-D theaters, water park, a ropes course and zip line, historic paddlewheel boat and the famed Moody Gardens Hotel.
The island’s newest green space and a spot that’s quickly becoming Instagram-famous is Hendley Green Park, which provides visitors a place to relax after taking in the shops and various attractions in historic downtown Galveston. The mini-park built by the Galveston Historical Foundation, includes a central lawn for outdoor recreation and seating, perfect for picnicking, thanks to the grove of 30 newly planted oak trees. The area also has accompanying tables and umbrellas, helping keep you (and your picnic) in the shade.
If you’re a beach-lover more interested in water activities, Galveston has definitely stepped up their water adventure games lately. Galveston Helicoptersoffered at Stewart Beach offers five exciting tour options, showcasing different views of the island from the beach to the bay. Thanks to Extreme Water Sportsthe island now offers fly boarding (think futuristic movies water activities), where flyers strap on a jet-pack device and hover up to 35 feet above Offatts Bayou with rides lasting 20-60 minutes.
New to East Beach, Galveston Island Horse & Pony Rides offers horseback riding along the shore for a romantic experience and Galveston Water Adventures on Pier 21 is offering a new sunset cruise, a perfect way to escape responsibilities on land for a evening. Another new adventure is Sea Scout Base Galveston, which offers sailing adventures on Sundays.
If you consider yourself a foodie, check out Harborside Mercantile, a quaint new restaurant brought to you by highly celebrated Houston restaurateurs Ricky Craig and Joshua Martinez. The eatery located in a historic building on The Strand features Southern coastal food including home-style po’boys, muffuletta sandwiches, seafood platters, and more, offering only the freshest local seafood.
Sleepy Time
When it comes to finding a spot to lay your head after a long day at the beach, Galveston has plenty of options, of all price ranges. For a nicer, luxury stay, check out Hotel Galvez and Spa, the only historic beachfront hotel on the Texas Gulf Coast. The pool and swim-up bar make this popular amongst travelers, not to mention the complimentary shuttle and courtesy bikes for guests to explore the island.
The San Luis Resort Spa & Conference Center is a 32-acre beachfront hotel and spa that is another favorite. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, grab a refreshing cocktail at H20 Ultra Lounge for people watching and fun summer vibes complete with fire pits and a drink menu full of tropical martinis.
The Tremont House is an island boutique-style hotel located in the heart of downtown, with a unique rooftop bar, thrilling guests since 2011. Guests should also take advantage of the Jazz Group Trio du Jour Friday and Saturday nights from 6 – 10, whether you’re a hotel guest or just there for dinner and drinks.
The sprawling island also boasts a number of charming bed and breakfasts and family-friendly houses and condos. You’ll find lodging accommodations fit for you and the entire family (should you choose).

The ultimate guide for fun, frolic and wine in and around Fredericksburg, pack your bags
There are so many great places in Texas to stop for a long weekend, an overnight visit, or an extended stay. Too many to count, really. But Fredericksburg is one of those towns that is a must-visit on any Texans list of travels.
Located about 240 miles west of Houston (70 miles north of San Antonio) sits the town most known for hosting great bachelorette parties and romantic weekends, mostly thanks to Wine Road 290. This luscious route has 15 Texas wineries along the famed highway and Fredericksburg alone has 45 wineries, and it is the #2 wine destination in all of America. If #1 is in California, you’ll see that makes Fredericksburg #1 in the entire state.
If you’re thinking your significant other or travel companion isn’t into wine, so this trip is out of question, think again. With places like Hye and unique varieties like a whiskey chardonnay at Six Cellar Shooters, it truly has something for everyone. If you’re still not sold, check out the Texas Hill Country Beer Trail, which is packed with independent breweries (more than 20) offering unique tasting rooms, sample flights and growlers to take home.
A favorite is Fat Ass Ranch Winery, which usually has live music, a taco truck and offers frozen sangria and peach sweet tea (infused with wine, perfect for summertime). If you’re a red wine drinker, check out the Texas Red, which is a blend of six Texas grapes. (If you do a tasting, it’s on both the standard and dry tasting menu, so you won’t miss it.) According to many, the cabernet tastes like steak. The winery has a fun outdoor area with adorable seating and horseshoes to keep you entertained.
Another great winery is Hilmy, which is considered a working farm, where they use all their animals to prevent using pesticides. They give much bigger tasting pours than most other wineries and are extremely informative not only on wine but also with tips on where to hang out while in town. If you’re new to wine, this is an incredibly educational tasting, just ask for Ace.
Since we’re on the topic of adult beverages, you should know that “Sidewalk Consumption” is legal in Fredericksburg (specifically Main Street). Many of the tasting rooms and local spots even offer a “to go” cup, so you can bounce around to different venues and shops and not feel stuck in the same place.
Let Them Do the Driving
If you plan to hit up the wineries further away (which you most definitely should), use caution driving. Majesty Wine Tours is a locally owned and operated service that will take you and your group to a few of the best wineries, get you there safely, provide insight into the area and even give you a snack during your afternoon. It’s the perfect combination of “let’s make new best friends” and having solo time you can spend with your wine tasting buddy. Scout out a few of your favorites, then come back the next day for more.
Back in town, El Milagro is a great place to hang after dinner on Friday (though they do serve food) with live music and great margaritas and wine. It’s outdoor and usually has a cool breeze and is super casual. It gets pretty crowded, so be prepared to share your table.
Bart Crow Band at Luckenbach
Luckenbach is an absolute must while in the area. Missing this spot would be like traveling all the way to Paris for the first time and not stopping for a quick glance at the Eiffel Tower. It’s unheard of. The Dance Hall/Bar/General Store has live music daily. We got to catch our favorite Texas country star Bart Crow Band. And you never know who’ll show up. (Pro tip: They don’t have Uber in Fredericksburg, but Majesty Tours will get you there and back for $15 per person).
Another can’t miss are the peaches during the summertime. Summer in the Texas Hill Country means peach season with a plethora of bountiful peach orchards anxiously awaiting pickers. You’ll see many popular roadside stands throughout the summer and won’t be able to resist the temptation.
If you’re looking for something slightly more traditional, check out the Inn on Barons Creek, which is just blocks from Main Street, so you can easily park your car and walk around. The Inn also has a spa, a heated pool and a full breakfast bar, complimentary for guests.
Get Outdoors (Yes, even in the summertime)
A huge attraction while in the area is Enchanted Rock, a state natural area with breath-taking views — although it’s a tough climb. Go early (take water!), because it gets so full that they often stop allowing people up at a certain time. It’s a short but magnificent trek up the rock’s summit, providing some of the most beautiful views of Texas Hill Country. Take your camera.
Also check out Lyndon B. Johnson’s State Park, offering a variety of activities (hint: you should pack a picnic!). You can fish or wade in the Pedernales River, go on a hike or take a guided tour. Any area of the Pedernales River is a good time and sort of a hidden gem.
A weekend in Fredericksburg will re-ignite the passion you have for all things Texas, guaranteed.

Not all glorious getaways require a round-trip airline ticket
You don’t have to leave the Lone Star State for quality R&R. In fact, in some cases a great getaway is practically in your backyard. For Houstonians, such an escape is closer than you think.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or an action packed family-friendly weekend, The Woodlands offers one of the areas best staycations. Even though it’s just around the corner, you’re still going to need to pack a bag and hire a dog-sitter, so you might as well make the best of it.
Sleep & Stay
The Woodlands Resort
For a family-friendly getaway (or really anyone who loves the water and golf), you’ll want to book a stay at The Woodlands Resort. Tucked away a few turns off Interstate 45, the resort completed a $75-million plus expansion and renovation at the end of 2014.
If you’re a golfer, a treat is in store for you. Golf Digest ranked The Woodlands Resort a Top 75 Best Golf Resorts in America, with access to two 18-hole championship golf courses (Panther Trail and The Oaks). If you’re lucky, you might even get a room right outside hole 18, which provides a glorious view to wake up to each morning.
A lazy river winds through the resort and the Forest Oasis Waterscape features two-story spiraling double water slides, lagoon-style pools, 10-foot waterfall, underwater music and more. It’s the absolute perfect place for kids — all of them. And, yes, parents, you can order drinks and food from the poolside grill so you too can relax while keeping an eye on the family. Alternatively, you can take a few hours and escape to the full-service spa.
Summer activities include nightly dive-in movies by the pool, s’mores, and more, and there are more than 194 miles of hike and bike trails along with bike rentals on property.
Robard’s Steakhouse and the amazing pool are probably tied for the best features of the resort. Robard’s is a 156‐seat high-end restaurant and lounge adjacent to the 18th hole with a private wine vault and outdoor patio. There’s a chance this might be the best steak in and around Houston — you be the judge. (Thrillist voted it one of the best steakhouses in Houston.)
Book a new reservation for a June, July or August weekday stay (Sunday-Wednesday) by May 31st and save 50% off your second night with discount code: Bookearly.

Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, the Woodlands Mall and upscale Market Street. Many of the modernly designed rooms of The Westin at The Woodlands overlook a popular public plaza (with synchronized fountains), known as Waterway Plaza.
Be sure to try the on-site signature restaurant Current, a concept by the Howard Hughes Corporation, with seasonal and regional menus from rising star chef de cuisine Nathan Friend. The sleek, second-level lounge SideBar, just outside the glass-wall of the gorgeous infinity pool, is a great place to start the night and kick it off with a happy hour of unique cocktails and appetizers. Sidebar’s pineapple margarita is a must try (Avion Reposado Tequila, Tepache Pineapple Liqueur, house agave simple syrup, pineapple juice and house sour).
The hotel lies within walking distance of pretty much any and everything there is to do in The Woodlands and is definitely a spot to be in on all the action this planned community offers. Bonus — fantastic people watching!
Eat
After you’ve checked out Robard’s and Current, there are still plenty of exceptional options for food. In fact, you might even want to implement a four-meals-a-day rule for your stay.
A foodie favorite (especially for brunch) is Hubbell & Hudson featuring some of the most creative and delicious dishes around. If you’re a pizza lover, don’t miss out on world-famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. Bonus: if you’re feeling super lazy and relaxed, order it online and pick it up to eat in your hotel room.
Play
We’ve got the championship golf and the lazy-river at The Woodlands Resort covered, but there’s still so much more to do in the area. Check out the luxury shops of Market Street or take the kids to discover unique fun at The Woodlands Children’s Museum. Stop by any of the fun restaurants and pubs along the way and grab a few drinks.
Don’t forget to catch a throwback concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion — take a blanket and make an entire evening of it. Most have probably ventured to The Woodlands for a concert, and for good reason. This summer alone, the pavilion is featuring concerts from Dave Matthews Band, Dixie Chicks, Florence & the Machine, Jimmy Buffett, Dixie Chicks, Blink 182, and many more. Pro tip: Download a friend-finder app to make locating your group on the lawn easier than ever before.
If you’re ready to plan a getaway to The Woodlands and need that extra push, check out the concert event calendar and plan it around your favorite show.
If you’re into good beer, head over to Local Pour in Hughes Landing on Lake Woodlands for hundreds of craft beers to choose from. Oh, and don’t forget all the million activities you can do on the lake!

Everything you need to know about arranging the perfect Belize vacation
If there were ever a destination that was trending, especially from Houston, Belize would be that spot right now. And for good reason.
Belize is just a quick 2.5-hour flight from Houston, out of either airport. (If you’ve seen the new Southwest billboards scattered around Houston encouraging international travel out of the newly remodeled Houston Hobby Airport, you know how easy it is to get to Belize now.) Everything is fairly affordable, making it one of the hotspots for Houston travelers, especially for a quick weekend getaway.
Belize lies on the east coast of Central America in the heart of the Caribbean Basin, and is one of those destinations that requires a little extra work, but it’s worth it. There aren’t hotel chains and all-inclusive resorts to help make the booking and logistical stuff easier, but rest assured that’s a good thing. Although it’s becoming more Americanized every day, there is still much of Belize that remains authentic, giving you the best of both worlds, literally. It also happens to be the only country in Central America where English is the official language, so travelers weary of language barriers can flourish here.
As someone who has traveled to Belize quite a few times, I’ve learned several common misconceptions about Belize. And I have a few tips for the savvy traveler.
For starters, as quick, easy and cheap as the ads make it sound, getting to destinations beyond
Adventures with Belize Parasail
Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE), which is where you’ll fly directly to from Houston, will cost a little more money and time (not just the 2.5-hour flight advertised). Upon reaching BZE, most travelers venture on to various destinations such as Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) or Caye Caulker by way of a small prop plane by way of Maya Island Air or Tropic Air (which offer excellent views of the beautiful water).
Pretty much anywhere you travel in Belize, you’ll want to – no scratch that – need to, be on the water. Being on an island is great and wonderful but finding yourself in your hotel pool staring into the crystal clear water just yards away will make you wish you did more research before booking your flight on a mobile app the night before. My vote is for Ambergris Caye in San Pedro.
Many traveling to Belize assume it’s a lot like Cozumel or Punta Cana with amazing infinity pools overlooking white sandy beaches and easy access to the water, but that isn’t the case.
Take San Pedro for instance. There are some very nice hotels (nicer ones include Victoria House and The Phoenix), but they aren’t built for guests to spend their entire vacation on their small private sectioned off beaches and tiled pools. Although beautiful and relaxing (and some far from all the action, like Matachica), your pools won’t offer swim-up bars and partying guests. In fact, most of the resorts have a limited number of chairs and hammocks specifically for guests, since it’s an island meant to be seen on the water.
Keeping costs down
A blonde in Belize
As affordable as the flights may be, costs quickly add up booking a few water activities during your stay. I spoke with a few locals and business owners, and the best way to get the most affordable cost is to negotiate all your activities up front. Again, this is why just getting there and going with the flow isn’t necessarily the best option for this particular destination.
For example, I worked out a three-day deal with Belize Parasail (located on Fido’s Dock, which is a great meeting spot for friends or to grab a drink and late lunch). Booking it all together and being up for various adventures really got the price down. One day we went fishing and then took the boat to a private island where the captain cooked the fish we caught while we frolicked around in the beautiful blue ocean. Another day we went parasailing, and another day we went wakeboarding. (Belize Parasail is the only place to offer wakeboarding in the area). Booking them all with the same outlet helped keep it affordable, plus you get the luxury of getting to know the staff, which is key to spending a good week in Belize.
Pretty much all of San Pedro is walkable, so you won’t need a rental car. Taxis are very affordable (and negotiable) and will usually run about $5 – $10, and many get around San Pedro by way of water taxi.
A few tips:
· Speaking of tips, it is customary to tip your captains and guides during your adventure. Most say either $20 or 20% of the trip is sufficient, but the people are so nice, they will appreciate any monetary acknowledgement. This has become a common question for travel etiquette.
· Don’t get sticker shock. About 95% of the prices you see will be in Belize and two Belize dollars equal one U.S. dollar.
· Bring cash. Every place in Belize requires the tab be at least 25 Belize dollars to use a credit card, so for a quick drink or snack, you’ll want cash. They also take U.S. dollars so no need to convert, but make sure to convert or use your Belize money before getting to the airport. I’ve yet to find a place that will change Belize money back to the dollar.
· Go during lobster season, which typically runs February through July. I haven’t been yet, but that’s all I hear anyone talk about is how amazing lobster season in Belize is.
· Keep it casual. Belize is a super casual and comfortable spot. You’ll rarely see girls in heels and guys in anything other than a T-shirt or polo and shorts.
· Like all island destinations, be prepared. Temperatures can drop, rain can fall and wind can pick up – for days at a time.
My preferred itinerary in a nutshell:
Fly Southwest from Houston Hobby Airport to BZE.
Take Maya Island Air to San Pedro/Ambergris Caye.
Stay at The Phoenix Hotel (ranges $325 – $525).
Massage on the beach (in a little hut, with certified therapists) and forego the typical spa scene.
Book an all day private trip (ask for the “everything package”) with Belize Parasail, on Fido’s Dock.
Take a day trip via water taxi (many hotels and resorts offer private water taxis) to Caye Caulker.
Eat (Blue Water Hotel), drink (Palapa Bar & Truck Stop) and relax (everywhere).
Bonus: Although airfare at Southwest and Maya Island Air is non-refundable, tickets can be reused (Southwest up to a year and Maya Island up to six months), without any penalties or change fees, so travelers don’t have to feel locked into particular dates if plans change.

The new San Antonio beckons with hip restaurants, hotels and attractions for a fun getaway weekend
If you live in Texas, odds are you’ve ventured to San Antonio at least once or twice. Because life is so short, I typically don’t like to visit the same place twice unless it holds some sort of sentimental value or is an extremely accessible place to get to.
But San Antonio has changed. In a good way. And in big ways. (And it’s not just me who thinks so. Back in October, Huffington Post dubbed San Antonio one of the Top 5 “Secretly Cool Cities.”)
I recently spent a weekend in the Alamo City and I found so much to do.
Location, location, location
When you only spend a short time in a city, having an enviable location is of extreme importance. One of my favorite aspects of the Hotel Contessa is that it’s located right on the River Walk. Though I’m not a huge fan of the watery tourist attraction itself (been there, done that), my favorite part of the weekend was grabbing a cup of coffee in the hotel lobby (it’s free) and taking a leisurely stroll along the River Walk, which stretches 14 glorious miles.
There are benches and various other sitting areas located pretty much everywhere, and plenty of places to snap a few romantic (or touristy) photos. It was the perfect way to start our day. It’s also perfect if you’re traveling with someone who sleeps in a little later, as one of you can easily head downstairs and take your own private walk or run, while the other’s still catching up on beauty rest.

heritage of 20th century Spain, embracing its unique architecture, hospitality and cuisine. A few other things to love about Hotel Contessa: heated rooftop pool, it’s pet-friendly and has a 24-hour gym.
Since we arrived late Friday, we opted for dinner at the hotel restaurant Las Ramblas, which was relaxing and delicious. If the weather is nice, you can also eat outside right on the River Walk and the wine menu is pretty extensive — all bonuses for your first night. The atmosphere of the hotel’s Cork Bar was also inviting and allowed us to chat with others visiting San Antonio.
Memorable dinner
The San Antonio food scene has changed quite a bit from what I remember. Even on a quick weekend visit, it’s clear that the city is looking to make a mark on the Texas culinary scene — and it’s definitely succeeding.
For dinner, Starfish is a must. It’s located in South Town, known as the art district. It’s a small unassuming spot — usually the best kind — with the perfect ambiance for a romantic dinner or just catch-up time with the girls. The demo kitchen just feet away no matter where you sit gives an intimate feel to the place. Then comes the food — perfect in every way.
For an appetizer, we had Crab In A Hole (rye blini, Texas cantaloupe, warm crab, head cheese; $13), and for an entrée, Monkfish (serrano ham, asparagus Milanese, cured egg yolk; $24) — all served fresh with local ingredients and a unique flair to each dish.
No good meal is complete without dessert, and we chose S’mores (marshmallow, chocolate mille feuille, graham cracker ice cream; $10). As an avid S’mores connoisseur, this dessert was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever tasted, although it didn’t taste much like S’mores. It’s definitely worth the calories!
Sunday Yum Day at its finest
Unfortunately Sunday left us with just enough time for brunch before heading back to Houston. We went to O’livia, about an eight-block walk from Hotel Contessa along the River Walk. We passed the courthouse and the beautiful campus of UTSA on the walk down on a perfect fall day.
With fresh, local, farm-to-table food, O’livia offers so much. It has an ever-changing brunch menu based on available ingredients as well as a delicious brunch buffet with a fresh omelet station and all the sides laid out on a beautiful wooden table (my fave: the jalapeno grits).
Time for play
We absolutely loved spending Saturday at Pearl, about a two-mile drive from our hotel. We spent all day aimlessly meandering around the Farmer’s Market, which is open rain or shine (Saturdays 9 am – 1 pm and Sundays 10 am – 2 pm). We spotted vendors and dogs on a leash lining one side of the avenue and engagement photo shoots lining the other – pure weekend perfection.
While there were plenty of options for food at the market itself, we stopped in at The Granary for a “snack.” Featured as one of the best restaurants by Texas Monthly (2014), it offers a variety of globally-inspired barbecue traditions and flavors. It also features craft beer brewed on-site and a selection of highlights from craft breweries around the world (ask for a few samples before committing).
Southerleigh was also a delightful place for brunch or to take a break from the market and grab a carafe of mimosas.
You should also find time to check out The Saga, a new cultural event at the iconic San Fernando Cathedral (walking distance from Hotel Contessa), that is free and open to the public. On the weekends, the showtimes are 9 pm, 9:30 pm and 10 pm, weather permitting.
Parting thoughts
From my experience, San Antonio is known as a cultural and historic Texas city, which it very much is. But this visit proved that the popular Alamo City is keeping its historic roots while strategically adding some modern touches. Almost every corner and street has unique wall murals and colored walls, adding to the overall vibrancy of the city.
I can say with confidence: 36 hours in this newer and hipper San Antonio wasn’t nearly enough.
During the holidays, the River Walk goes all out with candles and lights to celebrate. Be sure to check out Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias, through December 20. Enjoy the holiday serenity of the River Walk with a stroll along the lush banks of the San Antonio River guided by more than 6,000 luminarias. These warmly glowing candles in sand-filled bags line the walkways to symbolically mark the “lighting of the way” for the Holy Family. This centuries-old tradition begins at dusk Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Zoo Lights, through Jan. 3: See the San Antonio Zoo in a whole new light, with wild colors, exotic decorations and intricate animal patterns twinkling in the night. Thousands of lights create an immersive experience using traditional and unexpected color combinations. And your journey of light, iconic visuals, experiential displays, festive entertainment and delicious dining will be complemented by a seasonal soundscape perfect for creating a holiday celebration both unique and memorable.

Having been an avid snowboarder for 15+ years, I still can’t adjust to mountains and resorts whose lifts close mid-afternoon – those are valuable hours with or without sunshine that I could be shredding down the mountain on my trusty ole Burton board.
On my 3:15pm run on each and every trip in said towns, my heart automatically drops with the sudden urge to whine like Kim Kardashian on yet another failed marriage. Like I said, most places. That is certainly not the case in Aspen because I know on my last run I’ll pick up speed going as fast as I can, hit a jump or two (don’t get crazy here) and head on over to 39 Degrees inside the Sky Hotel (a Kimpton Hotel) for a Champagne Supernova (Moet & Chandon Imperial, St- Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Fragoli Wild Strawberry Liqueur and White Peach Puree – $18). And the rest of the world (or at least everyone in Aspen) will quickly follow suit making the bar just inside the lobby more packed than the Gondola after a fresh dump of snow. The hotel’s website boasts 39 Degrees as having “Wicked Cocktails and Aspen’s Best Burger” – how could you possibly go wrong? But the place is so much more than a cocktail or slab of beef.
Seriously. 39 Degrees is the place to be after a long day on the mountain, to grab unrivaled “bar” food, tasty drinks and check out some of Aspen’s finest – in the terms of locals and tourists alike. And if you don’t believe me, what about these recent accolades: The Sky Hotel recently was recognized as “A Place to be Scene” by Travel + Leisure magazine, and 39 Degrees was named “One of the Top 10 Places to Bar Hop Around the Globe” by USA Today.
The bar/restaurant/lounge is located exactly at latitude 39 degrees, so you don’t need to ask where the name came from. You can tuck away that handy little tidbit of random knowledge to use at a later date. The luxurious ambiance was conceived by Hollywood designer Dayna Lee of Powerstrip Studios back in 2007, and word on the street is the hotel (and bar) is on for a small redesign this year which will cause the doors to be temporarily shut from April 22 – May 23 with a huge relaunch party slated for June 1 (no word yet if this is invite only, but I’ll be anxiously checking my inbox to see if mine arrives).
The lounge currently boasts a retro ski-lodge feel you’d see in any classic ski flick combined with contemporary vibes throughout the place. The best place in the lounge is the sofa in the center of the bar, which wraps around the entire room allowing you to soak up all the happenings in every crevice of the dimly lit spot. Day or night you’ll find men and women of all ages there for one thing – the scene. In a place as picturesque as Aspen, that certainly says a lot.
