Ric Flair is the man

Ric Flair is the man

Quotes make the world go round. While I don’t have any empirical data on this, it certainly makes my world go round. And with social media and the ease of sharing things, The Blonde Side decided to create a set of shareable quotes, branded specifically with the TBS logo. After shooting a message out on Twitter, quite a few notable designers responded back, but the folks at Proof Branding caught out attention and we set out on our first (hopefully of many!) partnerships.

How did Jayme | The Blonde Side connect with Matt | Proof Branding: “Jayme and I connected in the early stages of The Blonde Side and it’s been pretty damn incredible to see her grow and evolve over the past few years. She knows her shit when it comes to sports, but more importantly, isn’t afraid to bring her own personality into her editorial process – that truly is what sets her apart and is the mark of a great writer,” Matt says.

“It’s a pleasure to partner with The Blonde Side on this project and it’s so important, especially in today’s journalistic environment – to pair the visual with the written word to offer up content that is engaging and memorable. Jayme does the hard work of cranking out great content – and we’re happy to step in and make it look (even sexier) than it already does.”

Awe Matt, now I’m blushing! I owe you a case of your favorite beer!

A little more about Matt with Proof: Matt Chevy, the Founder/Brand Craftsman of Proof is a die-had Chicago sports fan. “Bears, Bulls, Hawks, and yes, even the lowly Cubs (my family’s favorite saying rings true with Cubbie fans everywhere…’Maybe next year’) – that damn goat! I’m also a Titans Fan but ever since we came up one foot short of winning the 1999 Superbowl, I’ve had a bad taste in my mouth,” Matt says. (If you too are a fan of craft beer, Chicago sports teams, or branding at its finest, be sure to follow Matt on Twitter.)

The gal behind the graphics: Emily! She’s awesome! Emily and I worked side-by-side, via email of course, to work on these graphics creating a professional yet fitting look for The Blonde Side. Although not totally invested in sports (yet), this is what Emily had to say about sports: As far as “my teams” — I’m not invested in sports whatsoever, but I can say that I love US Women’s soccer. As a kid, I idolized the entire team in the days of Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain, and this year I got to go to the gold medal match at the London Olympics — a rematch against Japan from the World Cup. We won, and it was powerful and nostalgic. My dad coached my soccer teams growing up and taught me to love the game, it was my first trip abroad, and the crowd broke a record for attendance at a women’s Olympic event. So it was a wonderfully full-circle sports-loving moment.

(You can follow Emily on Twitter too.)

More about Proof: Proof is a full-service branding company based in Nashville, Tennessee that does a lot of creative work – logos, websites, print pieces, etc. – but they do it all through the lens of branding, encouraging clients to take a step back and think holistically, and strategically, about their overall brand – their big dreams and strategic goals.

A big thanks to Matt and Emily with Proof and all the other partners that have helped grow The Blonde Side brand over the years!

Boston Marathon Bombing

I can’t take my eyes off the news today. I’m not one to commit myself to violent news scenes and partake in media frenzies often, but this one, the one that took place this afternoon at the Boston Marathon has my full attention.

Maybe it’s because it hit so close to home, having two of my best friends running the race (both are thankfully safe), or maybe it’s because I just signed up for my very first full marathon in Philadelphia later this year and just trying to imagine what I’d be thinking if I were in Boston running today. If you’ve ever run a big race or played in a big game or had to give an important speech, you know all the scary thoughts running through your head. What if I can’t make the full 13.1 miles and my ankle gives out? What if I forget my lines and don’t know what to say and everyone laughs at me? What if I make a bad play and lose the game? Those are thoughts we’ve all had on our own big days as we put so much pressure on ourselves to succeed, but today’s tragic acts show those are the least of our worries, at least for right now.

The Boston Marathon is one of the most storied events in athletic history, dating all the way back to 1897 drawing an estimated spectatorship of 500,00 people and runners from 96 countries. And this marathon is no average marathon; it’s one of six World Marathon Majors where runners must have a qualifying time in order to even lace up their shoes and participate. This was some people’s very first crack at a marathon and this was the final hoorah for many elite runners wishing to go out on top.

The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) stated there were 23,326 official starters and 17,584 finished the race before the first explosion took place around 2:50pm EST, causing remaining racers to divert and evacuate the original course path.

Running a marathon is no piece of cake and it’s not for the faint of hearts either. It takes hard work and dedication, both mentally and physically, in a sport that does not discriminate in age or size or anything else for that matter. To be able to accomplish 26.2 long, hard miles is tough work, and sadly, for those geared up for today’s race, they experienced a nightmare instead of the euphoric finish line they all worked so hard for.

JJ Watt of the Houston Texans and 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year knows just how hard today was and what these athletes were robbed of when he tweeted this:

Today’s 26.2-mile race wasn’t just another race, it stood for something so important to so many people around the world as each mile honored one of the 26 Newtown victims from another recent tragedy. NFL writer, Dan Durkin (@djdurkin) really summed up the violence our nation is currently facing in this tweet:

Sending our children to school and participating in races isn’t something we should ever have to question or dread. But in a time like this, we must remain positive and stick together for the common good; something the running community has long been known for, which was captured on so many Twitter feeds over the past few hours.

Our friends at Runner’s World (@runnersworld) helped spread valuable and timely information to those monitoring the #BostonMarathon hashtag by supplying phone numbers:

Other avid and experienced runners put their common sense and social media into overdrive for the common good, like Kevin K (@kkee20), who suggested this to ABC and his followers:

Runnerspace.com (@runnerspace_com) shared Google’s new people finder so families could easily track their loved ones in or near the course:

Even folks like SB Nation (@sbnation) shared links of stranded race participants in need of a place to stay for the night or trying to connect those with places:

And finally, my vote for most uplifting tweet of the day goes to Pete Manning who had this to say earlier in the day:

Thoughts and prayers to all those affected by today’s tragic events and a sense of thankfulness that our community can band together to help one another in a time like this.

Should I Get Grouper, Snapper or Seared Tuna?

March Madness

@cponder7 timeline

Really Christian Ponder? How about you get a clue. In response to your ill-timed tweet lacking respect and any semblance of school spirit, that’s what you should get, a clue. A clue about being a real fan. Of all people, you should know just how important fans are during every single game, especially a game with this much to lose.

March Madness is just that – Madness. Utter nonsense. Madness for your team. Madness for your bracket. It isn’t for the faint of hearts which every sports fan knows, so it should go without saying every college athlete knows too.

You Ponder, are the same guy expecting fans to throw up a tomahawk chop right after throwing an interception to end the half. You ramble on and on in press conferences about how important your fans are to your success. To the vitality of your team. But at the same moment your basketball team, your fellow Seminole athletes, who are in the midst of their first overtime game of the season, you’re more concerned with posing a question via twitter as to what kind of fish you should eat? Really Ponder? That’s the kind of man I cheer for to lead my team to a championship? That’s the kind of man I’ve been rooting for and praying gets back up on his feet after an earth-shattering sack that he should have seen coming? Not to mention during a game like this, who the hell cares what kind of fish you eat or if you eat at all?
